1.0 FUNCTION OF THE GLAND STEAM CONTROL SYSTEM
This system ensures the sealing of glands in HP,IP and LP turbine under various
load conditions.
The turbine glands are self seal type (ref.gland sealing scheme). Upto 40%
load, steam from auxiliary source through valve (MAW10AA001) is taken to seal
all the HP,IP and LP glands. During this period the valve (MAW50AA001) connecting
this header to condenser is kept closed. After 40% load, valve (MAW10AA001)
is closed and valve (MAW50AA001) is opened. Pipings are so sized that the leak off
steam from front and rear ends of HP turbine goes to the condenser through the
valve (MAW50AA001) while steam from the two IP glands is utilised for
sealing the LP -glands, thus a desuperheater is avoided. The leak off steam and
air from the last chambers of each rotor is sucked into a gland cooler.
Building up of vacuum in the condenser is the first step during start up. For
building up vacuum, it is necessary to seal the turbine glands by supplying steam
to the shaft through the valve (MAW10AA001). The control system opens the
gland steam supply valve (MAW10AA001) until the press. in the header acquires
a preset value. Subsequently when the set picks up load , the press. of steam
inside HP and IP turbine builds up resulting in the leakage of steam from the
turbine into gland steam supply header which in turn would result in increase of
press. The controller gradually closes the gland
steam supply valve
(MAW10AA001)
and
opens gland leak
off
valve
(MAW50AA001),if
required.
2.0 ELECTRO-HYDRAULIC VALVE ACTUATORS
The actuators of the two control valves are continuously under the control
commands from the electric controller through two electro hydraulic converters.
The positive voltage output opens the gland steam supply valve (MAW10AA001)
while the negative voltage output opens the gland leak off valve (MAW50AA001).
Each hydraulic actuator has its own motor-driven oil pump supplied from station
AC system. In the event of pump failure, the valve remains in stay put position.
3.0 PRESSURE MEASUREMENTS
The pressure in the header is measured by means of a press. Transmitter. This
measurement is used for control as well as display purposes. The measurement
range is -100 to +900mm water column (MMWC).

CONTROL SYSTEM EQUIPMENT

GSC pressure control is implemented in a set of redundant controller modules,
redundant I/O modules & redundant processing modules.
The Gland Steam Controller comprises of press. controller and other devices
including power amplifiers . The pressure controller has PI characteristics. It is also
equipped with a progressive characteristic which acts as the proportion part to

cater for the varying conditions of the seal steam under different conditions of
operation namely start-up,loading etc. Its output is fed to electro-hydraulic
actuators via the adaptation devices and power amplifiers.
The actuators incorporate magnetoresistor potentiometer to give contactless nonwearing position indication. The output signal of the transmitter varies
proportionally with the valve position. This signal is used for valve position
indication in the control room. In order to ensure stable control characteristic
during the transition period of MAW10AA001 closing to MAW50AA001
opening or vice-versa, the valve travel of both the valves have got slight overlap
as indicated in the transfer characteristic of the position control system.
The reference value for the steam press. in the header can be set from control
desk or CRT/KBD.
The press. reference value is compared with the actual value supplied by the
transducer at the input to the control of the deviation amplifier. The pressure
controller is given the progressive static characteristics so that its action is
increased in
the event of large disturbance to the press. control
system,
e.g. a load trip. For small deviation upto +/-10mm water column, the characteristic
is chosen to ensure stable control under all operating conditions. The controller
action is increased for larger deviations.
Progressive characteristic of the pressure controller indicates that it is possible to
adjust the amplifications between the adaptation devices independently for each
valve. This feature enables to take care of any inaccuracies in the sizing of the
valves MAW10AA001 and MAW50AA001 and the pipelines.
5.0 MANUAL CONTROL OF THE VALVES
After switching off the controller at the on/off switch, the valves can be
controlled manually with the remote control manual setter by means of the
higher/lower push button under the
valve position indicators. The words
higher/lower refer to the change in steam pressure in the header. In case the
"higher" push button is depressed , it would either result in opening of gland
steam
supply
valve (MAW10AA001) or closing of gland
leak
off valve
(MAW50AA001).
