Students can recreate a story in their own way, using their artistic abilities.
Preparation/Materials/Resources
The Very Hungary Caterpillar book
Blank sheet of paper
Crayons
Anticipatory Set: (Activating prior knowledge/procedures, Preview/Review)
Remind students of rug rules.
Remind students how of inside voices.
Remind students how to talk to partners (soft voices and be kind).
Tell students that they need to try their best when creating their drawings.
Mini-Lesson: (Explain/Demonstrate the lesson)
Explain what a main idea of a story is.
Explain what it means to retell a story.
Give example of 3 Little Pigs main idea is wolf blows down houses. Key details pigs build three different
houses out of different objects.
Procedures:
Have students think about the main idea and key details while teacher is reading the story.
Read The Very Hungary Caterpillar.
Have students turn to their rug partners
Students talk to partners about main idea and key details.
Explain that students will be drawing the main idea of the story.
o Have students be detailed to their partners
Students go back to their seats and draw what the main idea (what they talked to their partner about)
o Have students use colors, add lots of details, and give their best effort.
Clean up/ Close out/ Review
Have 1-2 students who are sitting quietly, show their drawings/explain briefly.
