Fishing Reel: Anti-Reverse Dog

Failure

Company Name: TBA

Group Members: Matthew Storey, Steve Smith,
Holly Heinrichs, Ian Davis, Kevin Weikert
Background
• User was trout fishing with heavy line
• Hook got caught on a rock or log
• Locked the anti reverse dog so no additional
line would come out
• Pulled on the fishing rod and the anti reverse
dog failed
Material
Polyamide 12 (PA12G)
Direction of Forces Fibers

Conclusion
How Part Failed
We believe that the anti
reverse dog broke in
shear.
Why Part Failed
The material was weaker
than expected because
the fiber orientation was
perpendicular to the
direction of maximum
shear

Caveats
• We made an assumption that we found the correct material
• The incident angle of the force on the anti reverse dog was an estimate
• We had to estimate the force on the line based on the maximum that a heavy can
support
• We made an estimation about the average size of a brook trout
