Competency 8
Intervene with individuals, families, groups,
organizations, and communities.

Competency 8.1
Critically choose and implement interventions to
achieve practice goals and enhance capacities
of clients and constituencies.
Help the client choose possible practice goals
he/she can work on and motivate them in
wanting them to achieve these goals.

Competency 8.2
Apply knowledge of human behavior and the
social environment, person-in-environment,
and other multidisciplinary theoretical
frameworks in interventions with clients and
constituencies.
Explain to the client why, how, and when
human behavior changes, and while practicing
interventions, continue to monitor as the client
progresses.

Competency 8.3
Use inter-professional collaboration as
appropriate to achieve beneficial practice
outcomes.
Depending on the clients dilemma, a social
worker can use other professional services
when helping a client. For example, when a
child reports he is being abused, the school
social worker has to call DSS.

Competency 8.4
Negotiate, mediate, and advocate with and on
behalf of diverse clients and constituencies.
Negotiate different ways that the client feels
comfortable doing and ways that would best
benefit the client in the end.

Competency 8.5
Facilitate effective transitions and endings that
advance mutually agreed-on goals.
Help the client transition into the starting their
goals that way when they leave the social
workers office, proper skills can be used
without supervision from the social worker.
