Lesson Alignment
ABCD Objectives:
Objective #1: Individually, the 9th grade students will create
a traveling journal, while writing a minimum of three
experiences from that location with three pictures.
Objective #2: In small groups, the 9th grade students will
discuss the locations they are going to visit, while deciding
on at least five different places to visit and then sharing out
to the class.

Modifications:
*This side will be used
to list
accommodations and
modifications for
diverse learners.*

Objective #3: Individually, the 9th grade students will

hypothetically travel to at least 5 different locations, while
staying within their $10,000 budget.
MoSPE Standards:
Standard # 1, Indicator # 4: Interdisciplinary instruction
Standard # 1, Indicator # 5: Diverse social and cultural
perspectives
Standard # 6, Indicator # 3: Learner expression in
speaking, writing and other media
Standard # 2, Indicator # 2: Student goals

Missouri Learning Standards:
Communication Arts: Use precise words and phrases,
telling details, and sensory language to convey a vivid
picture of the experiences, events, setting, and/or
characters.
Mathematics: Modeling is best interpreted not as a
collection of isolated topics but rather in relation to other
standards. Making mathematical models is a Standard for
Mathematical Practice, and specific modeling standards
appear throughout the high school standards
Social Studies: Compare and contrast the major ideas and
beliefs of different cultures
Technology Literacy: Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate,
synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of
sources and media
Fine Art: Explain how historical events and social ideas are
reflected in artworks from selected cul- tures or his- torical
time periods.
Teaching Presentation
Engagement:
I will have the students get into groups of 3-4 and have
them discuss places they would like to visit and why. After
the students have discussed this in their small groups I will
have them share to the class where they would like to go
and why.
Exploration:
After the students have shared I will have them create a list
of 5 places they would like to visit. After the students have
selected the 5 places they would like to visit I will have
them start researching those places. They will need to find

several pictures that reflect each place they are going.

They will do their research on a computer or tablet.
Explanation: I will explain to the students that they need to
take the pictures they have found and the places they have
decided on and create a traveling journal. The journals
need to have at least three pictures, drawn or printed, that
reflect the culture, geography, and people of each
destination. The journals should also have explanations of
the activities they did while visiting that destination. The
students will need to research these places using credible
websites and databases. The students will need to cite
these sources at the end of their traveling journal. They will
be given a $10,000 dollar budget that they will need to
consider. They cannot spend more than the budget allows.
The students must include air fair, gas, shopping, hotel,
and all other fees into their budget. The budget must be
made using Excel.
Elaboration:
After the students have heard the explanation of the
activity I will show the students examples of a traveling
journal, budget, and art I expect from them. I will point out
that the travel journals include the following: daily logs of
their trips, how far they traveled, where they stayed, how
much money they spent, and where they visited. These will
be required, but more can be included. I will then ask the
students to start creating their traveling journals. (This will
be through a PowerPoint)
Evaluation:
I will ask each student to share how far he or she has
gotten on the project. I will have the students share which
5 destinations they are going to visit. This is to evaluate
how far the students have gotten to in the amount of time
given. I will give he students 5, 50-minute class periods, to
complete this project.
Closure:
I will have the students create a goal sheet for the week.
This goal sheet will have personal project goals to meet for
each class period. They will share their goals at the
beginning of class the next day.
