Possible Discussion Questions

1. List 3 things that are present in the music video that represent Suffrage?
Some examples of student responses...
- Gold, white & purple sashes
- National Women's Party
- Chorus chanting "vote vote vote..."
- Mention of the 15th amendment (all men are created
equal and have
the right to vote)
- Mention of the Constitution
- Protest signs in front of the White House
- "I want to vote"
- New legislation
- Marching
- "Remember the Ladies"
- Members of Congress voting Aye vs. Nay
- "Hurrah & vote for Suffrage - your Mother"
2. In about the middle of the music video there is this scene with four (4)
men in derby hats and a conductor. In the middle of the men this "house
wife" is singing "I am queen of my home, raise my babies that's it" and the
men are singing "no need to vote".
- How does this scene represent women's suffrage? Do you think women
were influenced by men? And how so? Do you think the expression on her
face means something different then what she is singing? Why?
3. At the end of the video, the director chooses to include three (3) very
interesting scenes 1) Congress, whom was all men at the time are voting on
women's suffrage 2) After women get the right to vote they go back to
running the house hold and all the tasks that they did before 3) When the (3)
women exit the voting booth they are dressed differently then how they were
originally in the beginning of the video.
- After taking into account these three (3) scenes. Why do you think they are
important to the message of Suffrage?
