Theme :​ Black History ( Civil Rights Leaders)

Background:
It is Black History Month and posters of Civil Rights Leaders are posted around the school.
Students are able to identify leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks. Students
read the books Martin’s Big Words and Who Was Rosa Parks.

English Proficiency : ​Speech Emergence


Grade​ 3rd- 5th
Subjects:​ Social Studies & Language Arts

Preparation
Content Objectives :​ Students will be able to identify Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks role in
the Civil Rights Movement. Students will explain how these actions have an impact on our world
today.

Language Objectives: ​Students will be able to identify key states and cities that Civil Rights
protest took place. Students will be able to discuss laws and actions that happened during the
Civil Rights Era.

Motivation
Have students work independently to identify actions they would not be able to do today if it
wasn’t for the Civil Rights Movement. Have the students discuss as a class stories, rumors,
facts, and opinions they have heard about the Civil Rights Movements. Ask the students did
anyone they know live during the Civil Rights Movement.

Break students into four groups and give groups the “I Have A Dream” ​Play​ and allow students
to add their own twist to the play. Have students practice and perform play in front of the class.

Presentation
Quickly summarize the key points of the Civil Rights movement. Show the students a short ​film​.
Discuss with students important people and parts of the short film. Ask the students what they
learned from the short film and the play.

Practice
Write Important names, groups, laws and events that were important to the Civil Rights
Movement. Allow students to pick one to make a poster project on the topic. They will draw a
picture or paste a picture and list 4 key points on what impact this had on the world. Allow
students to work in the computer lab and library to find information on the event. Students will
then present projects to the classroom.

REVIEW
The students will have a class discussion on things they had learned from the presentations.
They will share things that surprised them or made an impact on them. Ask students to write a
small timeline of events they have learned and interested them.
