Physical and Chemical Changes

Analysis Part 1:
a) Melting the candle wax was a physical change because it was only a change
in the state of the wax.
b) Burning the candle was a chemical change because the substance was
changed.
c) Tearing the paper was a physical change because the change is reversible.
d) Dissolving salt in water was also a physical change because it is reversible.
e) Grinding up the copper sulfate crystals was a physical change because we did
not chemically change what the crystals were, we only changed their form.
f) Heating up the copper sulfate powder was a chemical change because the
heat changed what the substance actually was.
Analysis Part 2:
A possible indication that a chemical change has occurred it a change in color, like
in station five with the heating of the copper sulfate crystals. Another indication is if
in the reaction, heat it given off.
Analysis Part 3:
Ash was formed from burning the pieces of paper in station two. It was a black flaky,
powdery substance. When we heated the copper sulfate powder, the color changed
from blue to white, indicating that a new substance was formed during the reaction.
