CHANGES IN MATTER

PRECILA R. UMALI

Cooking is Fun
(To the tune of Planting Rice)
Cooking task is really fun
When your heart is filled with joy.
Slicing, cutting, and pounding are some of the works involved
Observe now, observe now, what changes may happen?
When you chop your meat into pieces.
Cooking, cooking is really, really fun.
Try now, try now and it is indeed fun!
Changes that Matter Undergo
Matter

● Is anything that make up any object, occupies space, has m

and composed of atoms.

Chemical
Change
Physical Change

A change in physical appearance of matter.

No new substance is created, although the
matter may take different form.
Occur when substances are mixed, but don't chemically

react.
Changes may be reversible, especially

phase changes.

Chemical Change

Involves the production of a new
substance.

The new substance formed is entirely
different from the original substance.

The product of chemical change cannot be
brought back to its original state by
ordinary means.

Directions: Copy and Answer.

Write P if it is a physical change, and C if it is
a chemical change. Write your answer on your
notebook.
1.) melting of candle

2.) wilting of plant

3.) burning of charcoal

4.) condensation of water vapor

5.) chewing of food

6.) decaying of human waste

REVIEW
Match the original material with its
product after the chemical change.
Write the letter of the correct answer
on the space provided before each
number.
1. burned paper a. spoiled milk
2. fermentation of coconut sap b. vinegar
3. leftover milk c. rust
4. undigested food d. ash
5. iron nail e. feces
REMEMBER
• In a chemical change, a new and
different materials are formed.
• The new materials formed have
properties different from the
original materials.
REMEMBER
• The new material formed cannot be brought
back to its original form.
• Combustion and oxidation are among the
effects of the presence of oxygen.
• Oxygen causes changes on different
materials.
ADDITIONAL ACTIVITY
• Write ✓ on the air if the
materials undergo change with
the presence of oxygen and X if it
undergoes a change due to lack
of oxygen.

Chemical change is to determine whether or not a new
substance is formed. When the intrinsic properties of
the original substance or substances are lost and are
replaced by new ones, then a chemical change takes
place. There are, however, certain clues that indicate
the occurrence of a chemical change
change in color – tarnishing, rushing, and
bleaching are examples of changes in color that
are indicative of chemical changes.
change in odor – putrefaction or decay of
organic matter, a chemical change, is often
accompanied by the formation of foul smell. Any
change in odor is almost always an indication of
chemical change
change in taste – the souring of milk and other
edible substances are also an indication of
chemical change.
effervescence or the formation of bubbles –
the formation of bubbles from leaves of water
plants is an indication of photosynthesis, a
chemical change. The action of acids on metals
precipitation –the formation of insoluble particles of
solid may result from a chemical change. The cloudy
suspension that results from the action or carbon
dioxide on limewater is a chemical change
exothermic and endothermic reactions – the loss
or gain of heat in most changes is often an indication of
a chemical change.
