Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 1. Promoting Child Development and learning
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs are grounded in a child development
knowledge base. They use their understanding of young childrens characteristics and needs, and of multiple
interacting influences on childrens development and learning, to create environments that are healthy,
respectful, supportive, and challenging for each child.
. (NAEYC, 2011)

Brief Description of Evidence:

My lesson plan shows that know about the way they develop by my demonstration of being aware of
their physical limitations and attention span at preschool age. I didnt want to make all of the moves difficult but
wanted to push them, so they were still advancing and learning, but they were all things that were still not above
them making them appropriate. I also didnt make them do one thing for too long because they wouldnt be able
to pay attention that long. Yoga also is healthy for them and helps their gross motor development.

Analysis of What I Learned:

Through making this lesson plan I learned more about preschoolers and their abilities. I learned what
they were capable of doing and what they needed to improve on. It was important for me, as a future educator to
learn about developmentally appropriate practices. Its very important you know what is developmentally
appropriate for the classroom you are teaching so you dont ask them to do anything that they arent capable of
or something that would not be effective for them to learn based on their developmental level.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:

My artifact shows how I am competent of this NAEYC standard on many levels. The NAEYC standard
states that I should be promoting development and learning. Teaching preschoolers yoga teaches them a new
thing that many of not been exposed to and helps their gross motor skills develop. It also is developmentally
appropriate for their age, which is also part of the standard.
