UTN
FIFTH UNIVERSITY TO
BRIDGE THE GULF
Students will have another college to choose from following last weeks green light
from the government to open a technical
university in Alajuela, northwest of San
Jos.
The Universidad Tcnica Nacional (UTN),
or National Technical University, will be
Costa Ricas fifth public college, merging
half a dozen existing schools to hold about
8,000 students.
In addition to Alajuela, UTN will have campuses in Puntarenas, on the central Pacific
coast, and in the northwest Guanacaste
province, according to Roberto Thompson,
the vice minister of the presidency.
The (university) bill won the consensus of
all (political) factions, Thompson told The
Tico Times.
The executive branch, along with legislator
Janina del Vecchio, who was the principal
force (behind the bill) in the Legislative
Assembly, have been working on this for
two years, practically since the current
administration took office, he said.
Following the May 14 vote, the government
will create a three-member task force that
has three years to oversee the merger of the
separate colleges, define which subjects will
be taught and set a date for commencement, Thompson added.
The focus is to create a technical university, concentrating on technical degrees
including computer studies which are
what much of the futures labor force requires, he said. The companies that are set-

ting up here and others that are already

here and want to grow all demand a high
level of training in this area.
Thompsons chief, Presidency Minister
Rodrigo Arias, hailed the bill as a vote for
Costa Rican prosperity.
(The creation of UTN) allows more Costa
Ricans to bridge the gulf between secondary and higher education, said Arias,
President Oscar Arias brother, according to
a government communiqu. It means the
difference between underdevelopment and
greater prosperity.
The four existing state-run schools are the
University of Costa Rica (UCR) in San Pedro, east of San Jos; the National University (UNA) in Heredia, north of the capital;
the StateUniversity at a Distance (UNED)
in Sabanilla, in eastern San Jos; and the
Technology Institute of Costa Rica (TEC) in
Cartago, the former colonial capital east of
San Jos.

THE LEARNING
Learning is part of the life of each
living being. For human beings is
almost a part of the soul. Nobody
can take away the knowledge of
somebody else.
In the process of learning people can feel disappoint, humans
have the bad habit to think that
they have to know everything or
understand at once, and thats a
lie. To be conscious of our learning capacities is the clue to increase the knowledge, step by

EVERYTHING GREEN
In recent years people are becoming crazy to care the environment,
but most of the time it is just appearance. Unfortunately our university is not an exception, although we
can see the university clean. We are
not giving a proper treatment to the
trash.
The Managers University made
an effort buying those trash cans,
which are the different colors to
classify the trash. Even though, the
idea was good. There two serious
mistakes on it; the first one was the
lack of information. Many people
dont know what materials are
recyclable, so they throw away
everything without knowing if it was
correct or not. The second one was
the fallow up; at present those bins
are used like normal trash cans. So
they lost the real purpose.
But the managers arent guilty at
all; students and teachers dont feel
the real engagement with the cause.
Consequently all of us are being
liars with environment. It is necessary to create a real care environment culture at the university.

step and feeling secure of what we

are learning. Without worrying
about the rest of the people, because even though we are very
similar, we arent equal. We are
very subjective and each person
sees the world in a different way,
therefore the learning process is
unique in all of us.
The most relevant point in the
learning process is to know ourselves, and remember that all of us
have a talent that nobody else

ILE TEACHERS
THOUGHTS OF THIS WEEK

WHICH LIBRARY?
How much do you know about the UTNs virtual tools?

UTN is the newest states university

in Costa Rica. It has around five thousand students, who study many different majors in one of the three schedule
that if offers to them. Most of them
have one propose, which is to learn and
have better job opportunities.
UTN tries to give to the students the
quality of teaching that they deserve, in
order to become in one of the best universities in the country, making people totally able to face the working world. To achieve
this goal, UTN in addition to the traditional classes offers to the students facilities to study
like books, computers, study areas, and also a web page in which students can find all the
information needed from the university.
More than show you all the benefits that UTN gives to you, and seeing that this is the
technological age, and the importance of reading. What you need to know is how look up
for information in the UTNs web page. Theres one really interesting tool that all students
should use, its The Virtual Library. There are so many books that can help you a lot and

HEALTH
ADVICE FOR TODAY
EAT THIS AND LOSE BELLY FAT!
Oatmeal

Olive Oil

Your morning snack attack is caused by a

dip in blood sugar levels. Fiber-rich
oatmeal stays in your stomach for hours,
staving off a doughnut run.

Everyone needs a little fat it controls

hunger. Go for monounsaturated fats like
olive or canola oil. They will help keep
your cholesterol under control and satisfy
cravings.

Watch out: Steer clear of the sugary flavored varieties. Choose the plain stuff, and
sweeten it with berries.
Almonds and Other Nuts
Go nuts! They slim your tummy by keeping it full. A Purdue University study
showed that people who ate nuts felt full
longer than those who ate rice cakes. Stick
to 24 almonds a day to satisfy your hunger
pangs without overloading on calories.
Watch out: Skip salted nuts; too much
sodium raises blood pressure.

ADS

Watch out: Steer clear of hydrogenated

vegetable oils; they're loaded with unhealthy trans fat.
Whole Grains
The right kinds of carbs are actually good
for you. Choose whole grains their fiber
keeps you from getting hungry.
Watch out: Sometimes bread labeled
"wheat" has been stripped of all of its fiber
and nutrients. Look for "whole grain" or
"100 percent whole wheat."

MARIA CRISTINA SOTOMAYOR

LEARNING IS THE KEY FOR SUCCESS
Cristina as normally her friends call her is a new entry student at UTN. She is 20 and she is
studying Software Engineering and English course on weekends. What we want is to share
with our readers the honest opinion about UTN directly from a new student.
-Why did you decide to enter to UTN?
I decided to apply because I have heard good comments from regular students about the
university, and the facilities on schedule that it has.
-And now that you are here, what do you think?
Now I can see that the teachers are very good, they really have the knowledge to teach. The only fact that I thing is bad, is that
if you lose any subject or you cant register you have to wait one year to list on it. Because the university only open spaces in
the first quarter for new students.
-Have you study in any other university?
Yes, I was in UNED last year taking general subjects.
-And why you decided to change to UTN?
Well, to study at home was hard for me. I am the kind of person who needs explanations, it makes me feel more secure about
the knowledge that I am catching.
-What is better for you a public education or a private one?
If we talk about universities I prefer the public ones. But if we talk about schools, I think that private schools are better. Because for example, if I have gone to a private school I wouldnt need this weekend English course, I probably have learned in
my childhood.
-Why did you choose this university and not the UCR or UNA?
A couple of years ago I wanted to go to UCR, but I needed to work and those universities dont give the chance to work because of their schedules. So I investigated about UTN and it was the best option for me.
-What in general terms do you think that UTN needs to improve?
In term of the system education, may be Avatar. The register process is not completely secure. Because even when you make
the process on line latter you have to bring some papers to the university. I think that just make it on line should be enough.
-And what if we talk about cultural terms? Do you like the social environment in the university?
Sure I like. Teachers are kind and students can always be assisted by all the personal in the university in order to solve any
situation. And I already have some friends so in general, I feel really comfortable here. But in the other hand I think people
should be more aware with other aspects in the university.
For example in the politic area, people dont really know who our representatives are.
-What do you thing is the reason why people dont know much about that kind of topic?
I think it is because most of students work so they dont pay attention to those aspects in the university, and also teachers
normally are part time teachers, so the university isnt their only responsibility. In the other hand there is a lack of information, it could be good just give some information, in the web page more than register process, information about other important aspects.
-On scale from 1 to 10, ten is the best. What score do you give to the university?
I give to UTN a 9, because it is still like the baby of public universities. But I am sure that it will continue growing and in a few
years it will be one of the best in the country.
