A. WORDS AS MEANINGFUL BUILDING BLOCKS OF


LANGUAGE
Word is a single unit of language which has meaning and can be spoken
or written. Word is as a basic unit of language. Word and word become
sentences that have a meaning. We also have reconstruct able words, such
as:
Warning shouts fire!
Conventional commands Light!, camera!, Action!
Items on shopping lists, such as carrots, cheese, eggs
English spelling is so erratic, so looking up your dictionary is a usual
reason. We have 2 senses about word that have to be discussed:
a. In that they have meaning that are unpredictable and so must be
listed in
dictionaries
b. In that they are the building-blocks out of which phrases and
sentences are
formed.

B. WORDS AS TYPES AND WORDS AS


TOKEN
In the text we may find many words are repeated. A word as
types means how many words we type in the text. Words as
token means how many word we take without repeatition.
The example: I love my families. They are very funny and
awesome. My familier are never being changed.
How many words are they? You might say sixteen. But there
is also a sense in which there are fewer than sixteen, because
of the word families. So, there are only fifteen words of the
example.

C. WORDS WITH
PREDICTABLE MEANINGS
Words with predictable meanings are
existing in some words. These include socalled onomatopoeic words, such as words
for animal cries : bow, miaow. The
onomatopoeic words are not the same in all
languages. So, the words that are composed
of independently identifiable parts where
the meaning of the parts is sufficient to
determine the meaning of the whole word

D. NON- WORDS WITH


UNPREDICTABLE MEANINGS.
Word as unpredictable meaning is
a word must look up dictionary to
know the meaning. This word is
existing in idiomatical word.
Example: white wine

E. WORD VS. LEXICAL

difference of arrangement of word. Lexical
item is arrangement as well start from A
Z.
