owner/operator with the lowest Life Cycle cost over
the entire life of the vessel.

CUSTODY TRANSFER LEVEL MEASUREMENT

The measurement principle of the laser based
custody transfer system is as follows:
The level measurement is performed by a laser
sensor which is based upon the well-proven time-offlight (TOF) measurement principle of short laser
pulses. The system is normally provided with one
LIDAR sensor per tank, each unit having its own
explosionproof enclosure. The level sensor is installed
on deck at the top of a circular still pipe which extends
into the tank. The level sensor removal can easily be
accomplished while the system is in service without
the need for process shutdown or degassing.
The explosionproof enclosure is equipped with a
safety glass window, and is used to contain the
process. The laser beam passes through the glass
window with minimal diffusion and attenuation. The
still pipe extends vertically from the tank top down to
the tank bottom. Brackets connected to the inner tank
structure guides the still pipe for a straight vertical
installation. Sleeves located inside the guide brackets
allows for vertical movement of the still pipe due to its
thermal contraction or expansion. The still pipe
isolates the Laser beam from adverse measurement
conditions.
It is important to note that the still pipe is not an
integral part of the level measuring device; and that
the accuracy of the measurement is not dependent
on the characteristics of this still pipe,. Pipe
equalization holes are used to equalize the pressure
between the inside and outside of the pipe. The
system operates by measuring the distance between
the liquid surface and the LIDAR sensor. The LIDAR
sensor generates short infrared light pulses (Laser
Pulse) which travel through the glass window which
then reflect back off of the LNG liquid surface. The
reflected pulses are received back by the LIDAR
sensor receiver detection electronics. An electronic
timing circuit measures the TOF between the
transmitted and the received laser pulses. Time
measurement is converted to a distance
measurement by the LIDAR processing unit. This is
accomplished by taking one half the product of the
measured TOF and the speed of light. This
measurement principle allows for both a high-speed
sampling rate and suppression of any signal
disturbance through the use of statistical calculations.
Both the Advanced Digital Signal Processing (DSP)
and system software are executed in the CTS-V
processor. The level gauging is calculated by
subtracting the distance measured by the LIDAR from
the actual distance between the LIDAR sensor and
the tank floor.

Up to four level alarms with relay outputs are provided
for each tank. These alarms are derived from the
basic level gauging system. Their trigger points and
deadbands are both fully adjustable during system
configuration. The overall system accuracy is 7.5
mm over the entire gauging height and is approved by
NKKK. Both the system workstation and the printer
will display a 1 mm resolution.

available.
CUSTODY TRANSFER TEMPERATURE
MEASUREMENT
The temperature subsystem provides cargo
temperature sensors for five or more active and backup spare points in each tank. Changeover from the
active sensors to the back-up sensors is easily
accomplished at the workstation. Data is displayed at
the system workstation and printer with a resolution of
0.01C. System accuracy is 0.2C from -165 to
-140C, and 1.5C from -140 to +80C.
The temperature sensor is a 100 platinum RTD,
hermetically sealed and designed for highest
accuracy at LNG temperatures. It is a 3-wire sensor
and a Calibration Certificate is supplied with each
unit. See Figure 2.

CUSTODY TRANSFER REPORTS
The Custody Transfer System automatically scans
and prints the values of selected sensor
measurements. The measured data is then
conveniently arranged in columns which correspond
to the tank number and to the measured parameter,
such as level, temperature, or pressure. Provisions
are made to repeat specific data which is then
followed by its average. On Custody Transfer events,
for example, the average of five level measurements
will conveniently be corrected for the small motions of
the ship. CTS-V reports are in English and formatted
to the specific requirements of the gas contract.
Each report includes the Date, Time, and the Ships
Name. Other selected information can be input
manually.

Figure 2. Platinum RTD Configuration

Temperature measurement can be manually entered
or disabled by the operator should both the active and
back-up temperature sensors fail. The tank
information screen indicates the status for each one
of the sensors. If a particular sensor is in the
DISABLED state, it will not be used in calculating the
tanks average liquid or vapor temperature. This
applies for both displaying and reporting purposes.
The reports and the screen will also indicate if the
sensor is in Manual or Disabled mode. Temperature
sensors are protected against lightning by the use of
standard isolation kits as provided with the system.

Page 4
CUSTODY TRANSFER PRESSURE
MEASUREMENT
The intelligent pressure measurement subsystem
provides for individual, absolute or gauge pressure
measurement in each tank. The system accuracy may
be expressed at 1.0% of span within the configurable
measurement range with open deck temperatures
between -10 and +50C. The pressure measurement
can be disabled in the event of transmitter failures.
See Figure 3 for an absolute or gauge pressure
transmitter.

Derived Alarms
Up to 4 derived alarms per tank are generated from
the level measurement system. The alarms trip points
and deadbands are configurable from the workstation
and are password protected.
Abnormal System Condition Alarms
Relay outputs are included to alert the cargo control
room personnel should problem occur within the
CTS-V electronics. Detailed information concerning
CTS-V trouble will be displayed at the System
Workstation and reported to the alarm printer.
Independent Level Alarms
The Independent Level Alarms consist of one or more
fixed capacitance sensors in each tank. They detect
the cargo at a predetermined level. System accuracy
is 6 mm.

Figure 3. I/A Series Direct-Connected Intelligent

Absolute or Gauge Pressure Transmitter.
The tank information screen indicates the status for
each one of the sensors. If a particular sensor is in
the DISABLED state, it will not be used in calculating
the tanks average pressure. This applies for both
displaying and reporting purposes. The reports will
also indicate if the sensor is in the DISABLED mode.

The Independent Level Alarm measurements use a

different processor from the level measurements for
that tank (Derived Alarms) thereby providing alarms
that are independent from the level measurement
subsystem. Sensors, cable and input modules,
redundant power supply are unique to the
Independent Alarm System. Mounting position of
independent level alarm sensors is adjustable during
installation after the final position is certified by the
sworn surveyor thus ensuring maximum accuracy of
the high level trip point. These signals can be used to
actuate the shut-off valve of the flow of cargo to the
tank and prevent the tank from becoming liquid full.

SYSTEM ALARMING CAPABILITIES

The CTS-V allows for alarms derived from the level
measurement (Derived Alarms) and alarms
measured from independent sensors (Independent
Alarms). Alarm inhibition capability is provided for
these two types of alarms.
Abnormal CTS system condition is also reported to
the cargo console. No inhibition capability is provided
for this alarm.
The status of the alarms and of the inhibition are
signaled to the cargo console through relays.
A Foxboro Termination Assembly (TA) provides relay
outputs and wiring terminal blocks for
interconnections between the CTS-V and the cargo
console. The terminal blocks are compression screw
type to support connection to standard wire.
The relay contacts are double-pole, double-throw
rated at 5 A, 240 V ac, or 5 A, 30 V dc, resistive load.
The TAs are also equipped with printable paper label
for identification of the field connections. Relays are
configured in fail-safe mode.

Alarm Inhibits
Derived and Independent Alarms may be inhibited at
the system workstation, on a per tank basis.
The status of the alarms, for either the inhibit or the
released, is signaled to the cargo console through
additional relays. Two signals are provided for each
tank; one signal indicates the status of the Derived
Alarms and the other the status of the Independent
Alarms.
HAZARDOUS AREA APPROVAL
Factory Mutual approves the system as intrinsically
safe for Class 1, Division 1, Groups C and D
hazardous locations. Also intrinsic safety barriers are
approved as Class I, Division I, Groups C and D
hazardous locations, and Zone 0, Group IIB. Also
LIDAR head enclosure is approved explosionproof for
Class I, Division 1, Groups C and D; and flameproof
