WestCoasttobecomethenewhomeforJapaneseAmericans.Showamap(below)of
wheretheRelocationcampswere.Askstudentsiftheyseeanypatternsofthelocations.
Japanesewereconsideredanationalsecuritythreatandwerethevictimsofracism
andsegregationlegally!TheJapanesesegregationshowedthepowerofthepresident.

Throughouttheday,IwassurprisedthatmanystudentsdidnotknowthattheJapanese
wereinterned.Manystudentsthoughtthiswasterrible,butthegoalofthislessonwasto
highlighttheconditionsthatJapaneseAmericanswerelivinginforupwardsof2
years.Throughouttheweek,Iwastryingtokeepaconsistenttheme,fromthetreatment
ofminoritiesintheArmy,totheHolocaust,andthentothetreatmentofJapanese
Americans.Thestorythatthestudentsreadsparkedsomequestioning,suchaswhy
horsestalls,toew,Icantbelievetheysleptinroomscoveredinpoop,lastlytoI
wouldhavebeensoangry!ThroughoutthedayIevenaddedanexitslip,Whatlesson
doesthisteachusthatcanbeappliedtoday.Manystudentsgraspedthatinterning
peoplebasedoffoftheirraceisnotokay.Somestudentsevenbroughtinexampleslike,
Muslims.ItwouldnotbeokaytosegregateMuslimmenandwomen,butintimesofwar
theseviewscouldchange.
