DFX -5000/5000+ / 8000
Common Symptoms

On the DFX Series printers, most of the errors can be determined by performing
the test points.
When performing test points , if a motor , solenoid or print head are found to be
faulty ... ALWAYS check the corresponding DRIVERS , on main/driver
board.(diode check)

The 5 most common errors that may occur are the following:

1) cariage errors -- ( indicated by 6 beeps )

2) sensor errors - ( several different symptoms )

3) errors that may require an adjustments

4) motor / mechanical

5) Paper Handling problems

Topic : Carriage Errors

** Refer to 6 - beep code flow chart on page - **

** Never over look the following:**

*** interlock switch ***

** home position sesnor **
connections
carriage motor
print head dampers
DFX5000+ ( timing rail )
Intermittent Errors are usually caused by the Paper Width or Carriage Encoder
sensors.( note : still check all the above )

Topic : No Error Codes

(1) Symptom : Lights ON/off no functions. ( brain dead )

Possible Solutions : Parallel port may be shorting to GND. unplug cable from computer.(Make sure
computer is turned ON.)( check all plug connections )
Defective Proms
Defective Main board, (check voltages on power supply) .
( Note : if DFX 5000+ unplug from from outlet and let sit for 5 min. before turning back on... )

Previous Page 1 Next Page

Topic: Sensor Errors

** note: there are 4 standard sensor types that are used in Epson Printers, as follows:
Magnetic(hall effect), Mechanical , Thermal (thermistor), Photo(optical).

(1) Sensor : Home Position Sensor ( H.P. Sensor [ Photo, DFX5000,8000 )

Error indicated : CARRIAGE ERROR , Print head may slam off one end off the mech. , also print
head may move in the opposite direction ( away from home ) / not move at all .

Action (Photo) : this sensor could get blocked by paper particles/dust. ( Perform Prev. Main.) Try
cleaning.

(2) Sensor : Thermister (print head) ( thermal )

Error indicated : The print head thermistor monitors the temp. of the print head.
If the sensor reports excess heat, it may do one or all of the following:
Stop and Start printing ( suspend printing ).
Reduce Print Speed.
Move print head with out printing.
Turn on a Print Head fan.
Or a combination of the above.
If none of these actions cool down the print head. The printer will shut down , may also get a
thermistor error.
Action : Check the resistance of the thermistor @ room temp. Cup print head in hand , take another
reading , depending on the config. of the thermistor , the reading should go up or down.
If not , replace print head.

(3) Sensor: Paper width sensor ( photo )

Error indicated : The width sensor will fail one of two ways, it will either think paper is there , or not
there. If it thinks paper is there (across the entire platen ) you may find that it prints on the platen.
If it doesn’t see paper at all it may assume left margin is 0 and the right margin is 0 (lq-2550)
The printer may just feed paper through without printing.
With the Dfx -Series , you may get a 3 beep error code , indicating a incomplete paper exit.
as well when on-line is attempted the print head will go from right to left , trying to register the paper
width , but will not go on-line.

Action : Perform Preventative maintenance. Since the PWD is located on the ribbon mask , it may get
a build up of ribbon fiber in front. As well paper dust and stuck labels are quite common.

(4) Sensor: Carriage Belt Encoder Sensor ( photo - dfx-5000+ -only )

Error Indicated : This sensor reports to logic where the print head carrier is at all times.
If this rail gets damaged or dirty , it would show up on the print out as erratic print margins.
Inconsistent printing would be another . ( I.E. prints 1/2 a line skips about 1/4 of the line then
continues to print the last part of the line. )
If a ribbon jam or paper jam occurs , in the event of removing such a jam, the timing rail may get
misaligned. The rail should lay flat 1/4’ above the bottom of the mech. , as well the rail should pass
through the middle of the sensor.

Action : Perform preventative maintenance , check positioning of rail ,

test sensor. should toggle 0v-5v .

Previous Page 2 Next Page

Topic: Sensor Errors cont’d:

(5) Sensor : Carriage Motor Encoder (photo - dfx-8000 )

Error Indicated : (function similar to #4)Usually indicates a carriage error ( 3 X 2 beeps = 6 )
Could also cause incorrect margins.

Action : ( Sensor is embedded inside the carriage motor. ) Test sensor , should toggle from 0v-5v.
If doesn’t toggle , replace carriage motor.

(6) Sensor : Rear/Front PE

Error Indicated : Sensor indicates whether or not paper is loaded on the tractor assy’s.
If not detecting paper when changing between tractors it will eject paper off the tractor .
Next the printer will indicate an incomplete paper eject. It will not change between tractors.

Action : Insure that sensors toggle manually , ( easily ) Check for jammed paper.
Test sensor , should toggle from 0v-5v.

(7) Sensor : Platen Gap Home Position ( mech. - dfx5000+)

Error Indication : This sensor informs logic that the platen(print head gap is at it’s ref. point.)
You get a carriage error if the printer doesn’t get the signal of this sensor toggling.

Action :To test the mech.(dfx-5000+) the sensor should toggle open-short.

(8) Sensor : Jam (mech.)

Error Indicated : If this sensor stops rotating during printing/paper feeding , the printer will indicate a
paper jam. Usually the paper has come off the tractors , but still disabling the sensor. If the sensor is
not functioning properly you might observe that paper loads fine , prints approx. 12 lines and stops.
By pressing the PAUSE button the printer will continue printing.

Action : Insure that the paper path has no obstruction. Perform Preventative maintenance.
Make sure the paper source is in-line with the tractor assy’s.
Test the sensor by loading paper , using the micro feed buttons advance the paper through the printer.
The sensor should toggle between 0v-5v constantly. If not replace sensor.(or intermitt.brd.(junction)

(9) Sensor : Top cover (magnetic , older ver.5000+ was mech. )

Error Indicated : Will indicate case open.

Action : Insure that the sensor is not damaged or blocked.

Make sure that top case closes properly.
Replace Sensor.

(10) Sensor : Platen Gap Thickness/Timing Sensor ( photo - Dfx - series )

Error Indicated : Print head may jam against platen/ faint print . Won’t load paper , tractors jerk and
the print head moves in and out . Or it may load paper in and eject it multiple times before allowing to
print.

Action : Test sensor , should toggle from 0v-5v. If not , replace it.

(11) Sensor : TOP / Upper P.E. ( dfx - series ) ( photo )

Error Indication : Will give incomplete paper eject. Won’t load paper. Won’t change tractors.
Paper bail will open and close then give an error.

Previous Page 3 Next Page

Action : Check sensor located under the paper bail . Insure that paper or labels are not stuck in front of
sensor. Clean sensor. Test sensor ( should toggle from 0v-5v)
Replace sensor.
Topic: Sensor Errors cont’d:

(12) Sensor : Pull Tractor

Error Indication : If printer thinks the pull tractor is installed when it’s not, the following symptoms
would occur: Tear-off feature will not work. - Top of Form seems irregular.
If the Tractor is installed and the tear-off feature works ,then the sensor is not working.

Action : Insure that sensor toggles ( easily ) Test sensor for ( open - shorted )
Replace Sensor.

(13) Sensor : Tractor select sensor ( mech. - dfx - series )

Error Indicated : Won’t load paper , Won’t switch between front-rear tractors.

Action : Test sensor. Clean sensor , insure proper movement.

Replace it.

(14) Sensor : INTERLOCK SWITCH ( dfx - series , mech. )

Error Indication : If top cover or the switch is bent and not closing properly .( dfx-5000 may print
very slow without giving an error
The printer will indicate a carriage error !!! ** Never over look the Interlock switch. **

Action : Make sure that the cover closes properly and that the arm on the switch is not bent.
Replace.

Topic: Problems that may require an adjustment

(1) Symptom : When using Tractor fed paper, it will jam intermittently.
Possible Cause :(a) - Tractors are mis-aligned.

Solution : (a) - Re-align tractors

(2) Symptom : P/H jams up , inconsistent margins , won’t load paper ( constant carriage errors )
