Unit: English Language Arts and Reading Name of lesson: Antonyms and Synonyms. TEK: Reading/Vocabulary Development. Students understand new vocabulary and use it when reading and writing. Students are expected to: identify and use common words that are opposite (antonyms) or similar (synonyms) in meaning. Approximate Time: About 25 to 30 minutes. Materials Needed: Eggs, worksheets, and basket. Anticipatory Setting: Easter basket full of eggs since its coming up. Opening: Students will be able to identify antonyms and synonyms by matching two words written on an egg to its corresponding category and will be able to get 7 out of 10 words right by the end of the activity. Instructional Input: I will be teaching the students about antonyms and synonyms and how they differentiate followed by some examples before I lead on to the activity. The activity will consist of a basket filled with easter eggs which will have words that are antonyms and synonyms written on them. I will demonstrate 2 examples of each and will then ask the students to help me assemble the rest of the remaining eggs with their corresponding match. Afterwards they will get a fun worksheet ,or maybe two, that cover antonyms and synonyms that will show their understanding and keep them engaged. Modeling: Read the instructions out loud and how the game works, model multiple examples before handing out the assignments. Guided Practice: being able to recognize a know the difference between a antonym and a synonym. Independent Practice: They will have to work on worksheets Assessment: Working as a group to learn and understand antonyms and synonyms but sending them off by themselves to work on their worksheet packet so they can practice the new skill on their own. Closure: Have them give me examples, tell me what they learned, and what they mean.
Sponge: If they are done with the packet and all 3 sheets are done and have all the answers right then they get to play/work with the easter basket thats full of antonyms and synonyms while others finish.
