In this interactive white board activity, the children will touch the board to write and drag
synonyms and antonyms and learn about the difference between synonyms and antonyms.
Pedagogy Planning

Activity This lesson will be broken into two parts. Both parts of the lesson will result in the
students learning the difference between synonyms and antonyms.
Part 1 – Synonym and Antonym Practice
1. First, the teacher will read the headers (“Synonyms mean the same and
Antonyms mean the opposite”) aloud to the students.
2. The teacher will ask the students to raise their hands to give some
examples of synonyms to get them started. The teacher will write one pair
down as an example of a synonym pair and as an example of how to write
on the interactive smartboard.
3. The teacher will ask the students to raise their hands to give some
examples of antonyms. The teacher will write one pair down as an
example of an antonym pair.
4. The teacher will then call up students individually and let them write
down an antonym or synonym pair. The teacher will tell the students to
explain why they put that pair of words in the specific column. (For
example, they student would say if they were similar or opposite.) The
teacher would repeat this process until there is about 4-5 pairs in each
synonym and antonym category.
5. Next, the teacher will go to slide 2. For this slide, there will be pairs of
words listed at the bottom and students will drag the pair to the correct
category and explain why. The teacher will lead by example and say, “I
chose the pair old and young. Young and old belong in the synonym

category because they are similar.” The teacher would show the students
how she dragged the pair of words to the correct category.
6. The teacher would then let students choose a pair, drag it to the synonym
or antonym category, and explain their answer. The teacher would repeat
this process until all the pairs are dragged into the correct category.
7. Lastly, the teacher would move to the last slide. The teacher would explain
the instructions for this slide and do the first one as an example. In this
slide, students will write synonyms and antonyms that apply to the given
word. The teacher would say “The first word we are going to be using is
small. What is a synonym of small?” The teacher would wait for an answer
and then write it down. Next, the teacher would say “What is an antonym
of small?” and write the answer down.
8. For remainder of the words, the teacher would call the students to the
board to write the synonyms and antonyms.

Part 2 – Synonyms and Antonyms

1. For the second part of the activity, the teacher would start on slide 3.
2. The teacher would call students to drag the synonyms in the red box to
the words they apply to in the green box. The teacher would call different
students to come until all the words are matched.
3. The teacher would read slide 4 to the students and ask the following
question:
 Are pretty and ugly synonyms? (Answer: no)
 Are mad and angry synonyms? (Answer: yes)
 Are tall and short synonyms? (Answer: no)
 Are kind and nice synonyms? (Answer: yes)
4. Next, the teacher would go to slide 5. The teacher would disregard the
instructions on the slide (they are a bit confusing). The teacher would tell
the students to drag a pair of words that are either similar or the opposite
and put them in the right category. The teacher would do an example with
the students. The teacher would drag “stand” and “sit” to antonym
because they are opposites. The teacher and the class would do this whole
slide as a unit, but the teacher would still allow the students to do the
dragging of the words.
5. Lastly, the teacher would read slide 6 to the students and ask the
following questions:
 Are near and far antonyms? (Answer: yes)
 Are tiny and little antonyms? (Answer: no)
 Are huge and large antonyms? (Answer: no)
 Are hard and easy antonyms? (Answer: yes)
