B. Lesson Proper
Motivation

Group Activity

The students will be divided in to four; each group will be given pieces of paper with words written on
them. They will be asked to match the words with the same meaning or connected with each other
The word match comes with following

5. Broad- Wide
6. Fall-drop
7. Dangerous-Unsafe

Teacher Students

That’s Great! I am glad that you were

able to finish the activity given to you.
Now Let’s discuss your answers.

As you can see there are different words

that have the same meaning. Do you (All Students says “Synonyms”)
know what is a word that has the same
or similar meaning?

Discussion

That’s Perfect! Let me Introduce

Analogy. Analogy is the way of
expressing the relationship between
words.

We have different types of analogy.

The First one is Synonyms, so again

what is the meaning of Synonyms? One student says, “It is the word with the same meaning.”

Yes correct! Like the words Pretty and

Beautiful, Smart, and Intelligent they
are different words with the same
meaning.
(Students raise their hand and answer)
The Second type is Antonyms this one is
words that have opposite meanings. Can
you give words that has opposite
meaning?

Yes, exactly!
Another type is Cause to Effect
This analogy contains one word that is
the cause, or the source of some action
or condition and another word that is
the effect, or the result.

If someone throws a joke what’s your

response? One student says “We Laugh”

Yes, Joke will give laughter.

If there’s an earthquake, a tsunami will
occur.
If you have a cavity, then you will have a
Toothache. Could you give another
example of cause and effect? Students provides different examples

Wow! That is Perfect. Now let’s proceed

with another type of analogy which is
the Action and Object, let me give an
example
“Scissor” is an object and “cut” is an
action involving the use of that object.

Money is an object, we “Spend” it.

What else? If you have a bicycle, you
will pedal it. Someone says: You will ROW the boat.
How about the object “BOAT”

Yes, that is the answer.

We also have Part to Whole it is

comparison between a part and a whole
of one thing and how it is like a part and
a whole of another thing.
Example A part of tree is a leaf.
Heart-Human body
Classroom- Student
Film- Actress
If we say Books what is a part of it?

Finally, The Characteristics, some

common analogies are about
characteristics. One student says “Cover”
The first word in each half of the Another says “pages”
analogy provides a characteristic, while
the second word provides the thing that
has that characteristic.
Example:
Silk- Smooth
Cotton- Soft
Tropical- Hot

Can you please provide an example of

Characteristics? (Student provides different examples)

Alright, Well done. Do you have any

questions? Clarifications? (All says none)

Generalization

Now, class let’s remember that analogy is expressing relationship between words and there are different
types of analogy. We have Synonyms, Antonyms, Cause to Effect, Action and Object, Part to Whole and
Characteristics.
And we need to be careful in identifying those types.

Application
Group Activity: Class is divided into 6 groups. Each group will be provided with the types of Analogy. They
need to provide at least 10 pairs of words in each type.

Group 1: Synonyms
Group 2: Antonyms
Group 3: Cause to effect
Group 4: Action and Object
Group 5: Part to Whole
Group 6: Characteristics
Evaluation

Directions: Write S if the pair of words are Synonyms, A if Antonyms, CE if Cause & Effect, AO if Action &
Object, PW if Part to whole, and C for Characteristics

1. Florida – America 6. Cat- Whiskers

2. Angry- Furious 7. Sleep-Rest
3. Tranquil- Excitable 8. Professor- University
4. Drive- Car 9. Accurate- Correct
5. Polar-Cold 10. Heavy- Wispy
