B. Lesson Proper
1. Motivation

The motivation is a game and is called QUIZ FREEZE. The class picks four
representatives to act the words given by the teacher. The rest of the class should be in freeze
mode and they can only move when the representatives finished their act. If they guessed wrong,
the representatives is not allowed to move until the class guesses the answer right. The game
lasts only for 2 minutes. The words are: Jacket, Umbrella, Nap, Crying, Time, Unity, Racing,
and Earphones. The teacher will use these words later in the lesson presentation.

Motivitional
Question: What did you noticed in the game and in the words that the representatives acted and
how is it connected to our lesson for today?

2. Presentation of the lesson

The teacher introduces the topic to be discussed and that is Juncture. Juncture came from
the Latin word “junctura” which means “to join”. Juncture is a pause or slight delay in a
continuous flow of speech. It suggests the need of pausing to obtain clarity in thought relation.
“Juncture is the relationship between one sound and the sounds that immediately precede and
follow it.” (Roach, 1991)

Example: Are you leaving my child? Are you leaving/ my child?

Play nice Plain ice

The teacher will now move on to discuss the symbols of juncture: single bar juncture (/),
double bar juncture (//) and double cross juncture (#).
Single bar juncture (/) indicates the need for a slight pause between two thought groups in
a sentence.

Examples:

My teacher said/ the doctor is pregnant. My teacher/ said the doctor/ is pregnant.

We visited our students/ who are sick.

The teacher shows how to properly read the sentence using the proper pauses. A student
or two will be called to read the sentences. The teacher asks the students if they can think of
another example. If no one gives, the teacher will give another example.

Double bar juncture (//) indicates the need for a longer pause between two thought groups
in a sentence.

Example:

For appositives,

Dr. Jose Rizal// our national hero// was born on June 19, 1861.

For parenthical expressions,

The president// together with other friends// went to Hawaii for a week.

The teacher shows how to properly read the sentence using the proper pauses. A student
or two will be called to read the sentences. The teacher asks the students if they can think of
another example. If no one gives, the teacher will give another example.

Double cross juncture (#) characterizes a drop in pitch.

Example:

To err is human;# to forgive is divine.

The teacher shows how to properly read the sentence using the proper pauses. A student
or two will be called to read the sentences. The teacher asks the students if they can think of
another example. If no one gave, the teacher will give another example.
What differences did you notice in the three symbols of juncture?

After discussing the three symbols of juncture, the teacher introduces another topic, the
two classifications of juncture: open juncture and close juncture.

Open juncture is a movement which is not continuous. There is a slight stoppage of the
last sound. It uses the symbol (+),

Example:

It (+) swings

Its (+) wings

The teacher shows how to properly read the sentence using the proper pauses. A student
or two will be called to read the sentences. The teacher asks the students if they can think of
another example. If no one gives, the teacher will give another example.

Close juncture is a movement from sound to sound which has no intervening pauses or
delay.

Examples: Train, Blame, Merry, etc

The teacher shows how to properly read the sentence using the proper pauses. A student
or two will be called to read the sentences. The teacher asks the students if they can think of
another example. If no one gives, the teacher will give another example.

The teacher gives an example paragraph and how it used the symbols of junctures.

The family Hernandez/ is well known in their province/ Pampanga.// Mr. Benito
Hernandez// the hardworking father// teaches in high school.// Mrs. Gloria Hernadez// who holds
a doctoral degree// teaches in a university.// Mr. Victor Hernandez// who is still a freshman// is
their son.// “Study your lesson;# otherwise # I’ll fail you,”/ is what his parents/ nag about.

The teacher ends the topic reminding the importance of juncture: to sound fluid, a
solution to the effects of word or sound boundaries in sentences and clauses, to understand native
English speakers, to give clarity in thought relation and word boundary.
3. Application
 Activity

It will be a group activity. The class will be divided into four. The groups are going to
make a poem or paragraph about the words used in the game earlier. It should contain junctures
and the correct usage of symbols. Present it to the class.

IV. Evaluation
The teacher gives a five item quiz to the students.
Write the letter of the answer you heard from the teacher.
A. It sprays so be careful. B. It’s praise so be careful.
A. He said “I stink”. B. He said “iced rink”.
A. We’ll own a lot. B. We loan a lot.
A. A great ape. B. A grey tape.
A. A lovely plum pie. B. A lovely plump eye.

The teacher make the students read the two sentences on every number and explain how
juncture was used.

V. Valuing

The teacher asks the importance of juncture and how the students will use that in their
lesson, classroom and daily life.

VI. Assignment

The teacher will ask the students to search for examples of speech and will present it to
the class next meeting.
