Interesting facts I learnt and my research about Maungakiekie.
Maungakiekie is one of 46 volcanoes that are spreaded throughout New zealand. One tree hill was once a pa that belonged to the Maori a long time ago. Houses were built and was home to thousands of people. The volcano is 185 meters high (597 ft). One tree hill has three craters. The last time Maungakiekie erupted was in 17,990 BC which was 20,000 years ago. The Maori name Maungakiekie means Mountain of the kiekie vine. The Maori also knew it as the Totara that grows alone. One tree hill is important, for both Maori and other New zealanders. At the very top of the volcano is an Obelisk and is a memorial to Maori. Also at the top of the mountain lies Sir logan campbell. Campbell was able to plant two pine trees, but only one survived. Soon after, the pine tree was attacked by a Maori activist named mike smith. Since then no other tree has been planted. There is a possibility that this year a new tree will be planted at the top of Maungakiekie/One tree hill. We learnt about the maori and how they used
POST TRIP
Brief summary of what we did at the trip.
When we went to the trip we walked up Maungakiekie/One tree hill. While we walked up the volcano we were able to ask a lot of questions. Once we got to the top we were able to see a beautiful view of rangitoto and the whole of Auckland. Students were able to get a sketch of Rangitoto and the Obelisk. After That we walked back down and prepared to go into stardome, we learnt about planets, stars and wildest weathers. We got to do a quiz that related to the solar system and we had heaps of fun.
3 new things I learned about Maungakiekie
1
The Maori pa.
When we were walking up one
tree hill we learnt that a long time ago Maori used to use the mountain as a village for the warriors, children and elders.
One tree hill
eruption. The lava flows spread out in all directions covering 20 square kilometers which makes it the second largest volcanic field here in New zealand, and in first Rangitoto.
Obelisk/monument.
The monument on the top of
the volcano is a memorial and is been at the top of One tree hill for 50 years. It is a historical importance for the maori and other New zealanders to.
3 new things I learned at Stardome
1
Planets.
There are eight planets in the solar
system.Mercury,earth,mars,venus jupiter,saturn,uranus and neptune.
When the solar
system was made.
The solar system was built
about 4.6 billion years ago.
Earth
Earth was formed 4.6 billion
years ago and is currently the only known planet you are able to live on. Earths name was made by an old english word etha which means ground or soil.
My favourite part of our trip
Was when we got to learn heaps about planets at stardome.I loved when we had that quiz about the solar system. My favourite planet was jupiter it is by far the biggest planet in the solar system and is worth 11 earths all lined up together. It would take 317 Earths to make up the mass of jupiter.
