a) ThetypeofsystematicobservationIdidforBrandiiscalledSystemforObserving
FitnessInstructionTime(SOFIT).Thepurposeofthisassessmentistodetermine
approximatelywhether50%moderatevigorousphysicalactivity(MVPA)isbeingmet.
Onerandomstudentisobservedforoneminuteintermsofwhetherthestudentis
engagedinphysicalactivityornotforthedurationoftheminute.Aftertheminuteis
over,anotherrandomstudentisobserved.Theprocesskeepscontinuingconstantlyuntil
thelessonisover.
b) Accordingtothedata,whiletherewasagoodamountofmoderatevigorousphysical
activitythroughoutthelesson,itfellshortof50%MVPA.
c) Onestrategythedeliveryteamcouldtakeintoaccountismakingsurethestudentsare
movingaroundmore.Itisveryimportantthatatleast50%MVPAismaintainedon
average.Also,withregardstobehaviormanagement,Ifinditisbesttostaycalmand
collectedthroughoutthelessonandevenuseajoketogetstudentstobequiet.Inmy
opinion,thereisnoreasontoactfrustratedorannoyedunlessabsolutelynecessary,even
ifstudentsaremisbehaving.

a) ThetypeofsystematicobservationIdidforLoganthisweekwasatimeanalysis.
Specifically,Ideterminedwhichportionofthelessoncontainedeitheractivity,
instructionormanagement.Activitymeansstudentswereengagedinsomekindof
physicalactivity.Managementmeansthetimetheteacherisreinforcingcontroloverthe
class.Instructionissimilartomanagementbutthemaindifferenceisthattheteacheris
teachingstudentshowtodoanactivityorgivingfeedback.
b) Thelessonlasted26minutes.Overthecourseofthelesson,therewas810secondsof
management,195secondsofinstruction,and555secondsofactivity.Therewasafair
amountofactivitytime,whichwasgood,butalittletoomuchmanagementtime.The

reasonforthisisthatactivityshouldtakeupthemajorityofthelessonandtheamountof
managementandinstructiontimeshouldbekeptshort.
c) Intermsofwhatthedeliveryteamcandobetterinthefuture,itwouldbegoodtolimit
themanagementtimeandhaveaclearplantomanageanymisbehaviororother
unexpectedoccurrencesquicklyandefficientlyinordertomaximizeactivitytime.Also,
itwoulddefinitelybebeneficialtogivemorespecificandcorrectivefeedbacktostudents
duringactivitytimesotheycanimproveinamoreefficientmanner.

Analysis.Specifically,Ideterminedwhichportionofthelessoncontainedeither

activity,instructionormanagement.Activitymeansstudentswereengagedinsomekind
ofphysicalactivity.Managementmeansthetimetheteacherisreinforcingcontrolover
theclass.Instructionissimilartomanagementbutthemaindifferenceisthattheteacher
isteachingstudentshowtodoanactivityorgivingfeedback.
b) Thislessonlasted25minutes.Every10seconds,themajorityofthetimespentbymost
studentswasrecorded.Specifically,Iobservedwhetheractivity,management,or
instructiontookupthemajorityofthe10secondincrements.Activitymeansstudents
wereengagedinphysicalactivity.Managementmeanstheteacheristakingstepsto
maintaintheorderoftheclass.Instructionisessentiallythesamethingasmanagement
exceptthatinstructionismorefeedbackorientedwhentheteacheristellingstudentshow
todoacertainactivityorgivingfeedbacktotheentireclass.Throughoutthedurationof
the25minutelesson,therewas540secondsofactivity,405secondsofinstruction,and
555secondsofmanagement.Thisisdefinitelyagoodbalancebetweenactivity,
instruction,andmanagement.However,activityshouldtakeupthemajorityofthelesson
andinstructionandmanagementtimeshouldbekeptshortandtothepoint.
c) Onestrategythedeliveryteamcouldtakeintoaccountismakingsurethestudentsare
movingaroundmore.Itisveryimportantthatatleast50%MVPAismaintainedon
average.Also,withregardstobehaviormanagement,Ifinditisbesttostaycalmand
collectedthroughoutthelessonandevenuseajoketogetstudentstobequiet.Inmy
opinion,thereisnoreasontoactfrustratedorannoyedunlessabsolutelynecessary,even
ifstudentsaremisbehaving.
