What is the Westward Expansion?


In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson bought the land of Louisiana from the French government for
$15 million.
The louisiana Purchase stretched the mississippi river to the rocky mountains and from canada to
new orleans
It doubled the size of the united states
Westward Expansion was the key to the nations health
in the future, slavery would be prohibited north of the southern boundary of Missouri

What is Manifest Destiny


Manifest Destiny; a term for the time during the 19th century period of American expansion that the United
States not only could, but was destined to, stretch from coast to coast.
By 1840 nearly 7 million Americans lived in the trans-Appalachian West.
Most people left their homes in the search of economic opportunity
Like Thomas Jefferson, many of the pioneers associated westward migration, land ownership and farming with
freedom.
The term manifest destiny originated in the 1840s.
This expansion would involve the progress of liberty and individual economic opportunity..

They would have to decide if slavery would be allowed in the new western states
In 1820, the Missouri Compromise attempted to solve slavery in certain states to be free states
and some slave states
in the future slavery was prohibited north of the southern boundary apart of the louisiana
purchase
