SAFTEY CONCIDERATIONS
Use approved safety glasses and disposable rubber gloves. Conduct the
inspection in a well vented area and avoid inhaling any chemical sprays
used. If a suitable ventilated area is not available the use of an approved
respirator will be required in addition to the equipment needed listed below.

CALIBRATION PROCEDURES:
1. Use thermometer to check the room ambient temperature. The
temperature must be at least 10 degrees Celsius and no higher than 52
degrees Celsius.
2. Use white light meter and turn on switch to 1999-2000 the white visible
light must be at least 1000 lux for a critical inspection.

PROCEDURE STEPS:
1. Check piece to make sure that the test specimen is dry and cleaned
properly (cracks filled with water or dried penetrant)
2. Carry out calibration checks as detailed above and record results.
3. Apply penetrant on the face of the weld, heat effected zone, throat of the
weld (both ends) and the root of the weld. Insure all areas are covered with
penetrant. See diagram on page 5.
4. Allow penetrant to dwell on the weld for 30 minutes (Note ASTM currently
recommends only 5-10 minutes dwell time in most cases).
5. Check the penetrant often to insure that it is not drying on the weld and
adjacent areas. Reapply penetrant if drying is noted.
6. After dwell time has passed, use a clean lint free cloth to remove most of
the penetrant on the weld and adjacent areas.
7. Use a new clean lint free cloth shake can and apply a small amount of
cleaner/remover to the cloth and wipe to remove more penetrant from the
surface being inspected.
8. Continue applying a light coating of remover to a clean part of the cloth,
wiping and checking to see if penetrant is still being removed from the piece.
(Look for the presence of penetrant coming away on the cloth).
9. As soon as no further penetrant is being removed by wiping stop wiping
the surface to insure that the penetrant is not being removed from the
discontinuities.

10. If cleaner/remover has not dried from the surface, lightly blow over the
area with dry heat to evaporate the cleaner remover.

11. Shake developer aerosol can apply a thin coating of developer from the
aerosol can spraying one foot away from test piece. Allow coating to dry and
look for a uniform white background. If evidence of incomplete cleaning is
observed, clean the part as described in steps 17 to 21 below, allow the
piece to cool to room temperature, and reprocess from the beginning.
12. Allow developer to dwell on surface for a minimum 15 minutes.
13. Insure that the development process is closely watched, to observe as
discontinuities develop. Interpretation is aided by watching the development
of indications during the development process. (Crater cracks can start
looking like cracks, and by the end of development can look like porosity).
14. Carry out the final inspection of the piece no sooner than 15 minutes and
no later than 30 minutes after developer was applied. Utilize magnifying
glass to look for hard to see discontinuities.
15. Record the position, length and width of each discontinuity noted on the
diagram
attached.
16. Refer to the diagram I have included with the discontinuities noted.
Insure that all 12 have been noted.
NOTE: Only relevant indications are to be recorded. Do not record non
relevant or false indications.
17. When the inspection of the piece has been completed, clean off
developer and penetrant from piece using cleaner/remover sprayed directly
on the piece and wiped off with a clean cloth.
18. Soak the part in acetone to penetrate and dissolve any penetrant
remaining in discontinuities.
19. Place piece in an ultrasonic cleaner, and allow it to remain in cleaner for
at least 30 minutes.
20. Remove part, and clean off any ultrasonic cleaner solvent in clean water.

21. Place piece in the dryer and allow the water to evaporate from the
discontinuities.
22. Return part into the proper storage bin.
23. Insure that all equipment and supplies are put away and the area has
been cleaned up.
24. Hand in all paper work to a CGSB LPI level 2. All defects are to evaluated
by a CGSB LPI level 2. All defects are to be repaired and re inspected by a
CGSB LPI level 2.
