Reflection
Today I learned many things about the war, and how a child’s outlook on it is. 1
like how brother Spring gave took the time to explain how his mother reacted to the
war and the story of how she brought in many soldiers to house with them because
she knew of the war would feel to be home sick.
Asa child | feel that we would all not really understand how to react, not
knowing what was going on with the Germans and that there were new enemies
now being the Japanese. Its scary how people had to wear gas masks and the Asians
were sent to camps. A back-story actually is my uncle his name was Ken he lived in
Hawaii during the war and he was the only one in our family to be sent toa camp |
believe somewhere in Sacramento, which later he was released. A while ago when I
was younger he actually died he was kind of old but, he died of valley fever which he
got from the camp.
Bro.spring talked a little about the 4424 regiment which one of my grandpas
brothers was apart of he got a purple heart for being wounded and another metal
for some kind of act of bravery.
I really enjoyed the talk today because it is apart of my family’s history and its nice
to learn things that people of my family that passed on cant retell but others can. My
grandfather is still alive and he still reminds me how fortunate we are to live today
because those times during the war were vey tough him being a grad of saint Louis
class of 53”.

Guest Speaker Reflection
First and foremost, I really enjoyed listening to Brother. He was very enthusiastic
and had many experiences to share with us. For someone who is 80+ years old, he was
very energetic and had an amazi
ig memory. Some people questioned whether he was
making things up or telling the truth, but I knew he was telling the truth. You could just
tell by the smile on his face, and how all his memories seemed to come back to him as he
spoke, He could have gone on for much longer but the class period was too short. It
would’ ve been fun listening to some of his other experiences.
I think most of us felt a connection to Brother because he was a 1951 graduate of
Saint Louis School. It doesn’t matter how old he is. Because he graduated from Saint
Louis, he is a fellow brother of ours. One thing that was cool about his talk was that he
‘was telling his experiences from the view of an eight-year-old boy, rather than a soldier
on the front line. Because of this, we were able to experience World War II through an
innocent little boy’s perspective.
Of course Brother discussed key facts and dates, but he also made it interesting
with some funny/cool facts. One funny fact was that Brother started smoking at the age of
eight, and quit by the age of ten, It was even funnier when he mentioned that he didn’t do
drugs because there was no pacalolo. One thing that I found very interesting is how
everyone was required to have their gas mas with them at all times, Brother couldn’t use
a proper gas mask because he couldn't find one that fit his head. Instead, he had to use awet cloth to breathe through. Another cool thing that Brother talked about is how his
family would take in soldiers and take care of them. His mom even managed to get over
2,000 signatures in her booklet of people that she helped. It was also cool to hear that the
buildings at Saint Louis used to be all connected by metal walkways.
