Problem Statement
According to a 2014 report by the World Health Organization, figures indicate
that 35% of women experience sexually motivated violence in their lifetime.
Though there are many self-defense products and techniques, recent
statistics have shown an upward trend in violence pinpointed against women.
Amnesty International says violence against women is an issue that affects a
woman's abilities to access the full spectrum of her human rights. This issue
not only affects prevalent countries like the United States, but globally to third
world countries as well.

Market Research
The problem with attack, especially against women, is it is very widespread in
method and execution. Currently, there are many devices that serve the same
or close to the same purpose(s). Although there are many kinds of solutions
to the attack, there are also still many forms of attack and the market of self
defense is continually growing to counteract the risks. With research, we
found existing products such as tasers, pepper spray, keychain weapons, but
there weren't any that we readily available, because in order to use said
products, one had to reach into a bag or purse. If there was a product that
were on a person and instantly usable, it would offer more protection by
incorporating mechanism such as GPS or alarms, the likelihood of a victim
escaping attack compared to other devices will be much greater.

Expert
Unfortunately many cases of rape do not get reported,
and the ones that are, are usually reported months after
the incident where there is less evidence available for us
to use. Our expert told us she hopes that they would
report it so her department can do something about it.
When asked about prior knowledge on products she was not familiar with many outside products
other than the basic pepper spray. She teaches many campus self-defense classes such as RAD,
which teaches moves, like basic punches and kicks to get out of many forms of assaults, like bear
hugs. When asked about a phone connected product she explained to us that the only problem with
an app is that the attacker isnt going to wait for you to pull out your phone, here isnt time to wait,
you need a way to do it immediately. She really liked the idea of a jewelry based product saying, if it
were put into something fashionable, more people would want to wear it.

Industry
There are various taser products that have been included in jewelry and phone cases. While these are
effective and useful, they require close contact and can be used against the victim. There are also simpler
products, such as pointed key chains and small bats, that are easy to use but also easy to lose, therefore
they can also be used against the victim. There have been some products that cannot be used against the
victim, like electrified clothing and anti-rape underwear, but these products have had many malfunctions
and are not being produced for the general public at the moment.
WomenonGuard is a huge supplier of self defense weapons for women which include weapon
accessories. They sell tons of weapons especially to younger, college aged women who tend to be more
subject than other women (while all women are at higher risk of attack than men) to attack. Since such a
large majority of those needing help in self defense are (young) women, companies and
the self defense industry gear their products toward them in order to profit more. Our
product fits in that industry, as it will be geared toward women, but as a different form of self defense. Our
product will focus on aesthetic and prevention of attacks.

Deciding on a Design

Testing
-Compatibility-This analysis showed that the device is potentially compatible given the correct

materials. Though it cannot be created perfectly to the original plan, the GPS tracker as well as the design of
the bracelet serves as a proof of concept. To keep with the goal of the bracelet being as accessible as
possible we focused on the GPS tracking chip and the material and design to serve to create a product of
our original desire. For our modifications, this is our main concern to tinker with.

-Accessibility-The experiment showed that the device is overall effective in accessibility meaning the

hypothesis was accepted to an extent. There are still some issues with speed. While the times shown in the
table were good, it would be better for them to be faster, whether that means finding a more accessible
point in the body and making the device have more than one access point, will be something that we need
to figure out in our modifications.

-Durability-- The experiment showed that the device is overall effective in use and durability so it can

be used for a while and multiple times. There are still some issues with certain parts of the device not
working which will have to be improved. While the data from the table was stable we would also like the
starting points and ability at the start to be better and they will be something that we need to figure out in
our modifications.

Proof of Concept
Due to lack of funds, and equipment, we were not to make to make our
product as compact as we wanted. Our GPS locator was small enough to fit
into the bracelet, but as we built the sound alarm ourselves, it was not small
enough. Because of this we built it in a bigger scale to show it would work in
theory.

Our Product
Our goal is to prevent young women from having to face off with an attacker.
Far too many times women end up helpless with no way to get out of an
attack, because they try to fend off the attacker. Our device prevents all of
that from happening. With Back-Up a women can press a button, conveniently
located on the stylish Back-Up Bracelet, to sound an alarm and send their GPS
location to the police and/or a family member or friend who has the Back-Up
app on their phone. Sounding an alarm with throw the attacker off, alert
others in the area, and give the Back-Up owner time to get away. The app can
be downloaded for free on the app store and can easily be synced with any
bracelet using the unique bracelet identification code.
