Field Ecology

Purpose:
The purpose of this course is twofold. One, to learn about the science of ecology
and the ecology of Hawaii, and two, how to do ecological research. You will apply
the things you learn in class and in your independent work to research projects
which take place in the field. You will also practice your communication skills
through oral, visual, and written work.

Office Hours Tuesday/Thursday 1:20 pm 2:30 pm, Fridays: 12 pm 2:30 pm, any
other time is by appointment
Expectations:
You will come to class prepared to learn. This means two things. 1, you have
completed the homework and are ready to participate in a class discussion or
activity. 2, you have the proper clothing and equipment with you for the field
activity of the day. Required homework and clothing/equipment will be posted on
my website no later than the Monday prior to class.
It is expected that you have taken and passed Biology prior to enrolling in this
course. Field Ecology is an upper division class. As such, I expect you to work hard
and make wise choices with regards to your behavior. Behavior in class and in the
field will be factored into your final grade via 21 st Century Skills. An A is exemplary,
and only students who truly go above and beyond will earn such a high level score.
That being said, all students who show effort on an assignment the first time around
will be allowed to remediate work. If you put the work in, I will help you revise and
achieve your goals.
Grading:
21st Century Skills = 25%
Classwork/Homework = 25%
Assessments = 50%
Assessment remediation policy You may remediate assessments. The average of
your two assessment scores will be your final grade.
Late Work Policy:
I will not accept late work.
If your work is going to be late I expect you to notify me ahead of time with an
explanation for why the work will be late and your plan for getting back on track.

Required Supplies:
Half Earth by Edward O. Wilson
Hard cover notebook or binder with lose-leaf paper
Pencils/Pens
Water bottle with water
Sun protection (sunglasses, hat, sunscreen)
Close-toed shoes (for hiking and/or service work)
Long pants (for hiking and/or service work)
Bathing suit/towel/shoes to get wet
Backpack for carrying supplies while in the field
Snorkeling equipment (mask, snorkel, fins)
Clipboard (optional)
Absence Policy:
This course meets once per week and requires a significant amount of work in the
field. Because I only see you between 8 and 10 times in a quarter, and because field
work is not the sort of work that is easy for you to make up on your own, missing
class is strongly discouraged. As such, students may miss ONE field class per
quarter with no penalty. If you miss more than one class you will earn a 0 for the
field portion of the work and will not be able to make up the assignment. Exceptions
to this policy for situations such as extended illness or family obligations will be
considered on a case by case basis. It is important you communicate with me as
soon as possible if you require special consideration.
Transportation Policy:
Students must arrive at the Kihei Charter School high school campus in time for
8:30 am class start time. Students must ride in school vans to and from field sites.
In special circumstances students may drive their own vehicles to field sites. This
will require special permission from me and communication between myself and
your parent(s).
Technology Policy:
Cell phones and tablets are highly useful tools when used properly. I am happy to
allow you to use these devices as calculators, cameras, and research tools when we
are in class. However, if you misuse your device (texting, Snapchat, Facebook, offtopic websites, etc.) while in class, I will confiscate your device. The school-wide
three strikes youre out policy applies.
I have read the class policies. I understand and agree to comply with the class
policies.
