English I Syllabus

2009-2010

Office Hours: 7:15 a.m. – 7:30 a.m. AND 2:15 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Course Objective:
1. The student will develop and apply expansive knowledge of
words and word meanings to communicate.
2. The student will comprehend, respond to, interpret, or evaluate a
variety of texts of increasing length, difficulty, and complexity.

3. The student will produce, analyze, and evaluate effective


communication.

4. The student will use Standard English grammar, mechanics, and


sentence structure to communicate.

Required Materials:
1. A three ring binder separated into 4 sections
a. Journal
b. Vocabulary
c. Language
d. Literature
Grading System:
90-100= A 89-80= B 79-70= C 69-60= D 59-0= F
Regularly graded assignments:
Each nine weeks I will grade the binder for completion of your
daily journals and weekly vocabulary. This will count as a test
grade. You will receive either a zero or a 100.
Attendance:
I will follow all rules stated in the Marshall County Student
Handbook for the 2009-2010 school year.
Tardy:
When the bell rings my classroom door will be shut and locked, a
tardy slip will be needed to enter.
Make – Up Work:
Each class will have its own make-up work folder. When a student
is absent it is their responsibility to retrieve the assignment out
of the designated folder. Each student has one day for every day
missed to make up work. That means if a student is absent
on Monday and returns on Tuesday the work is due on
Wednesday. I will not accept make-up work past the
allotted amount of time.
Make-up Test:
Tests can be made up during my office hours or if the student has
a study hall period. Tests cannot be made up during regular class
hours or during another teacher’s class time.
Bathroom Breaks:
I am only allotted 50 minutes for each class period. Within that
small amount of time I have a lot of material to teach. It will be
the student’s responsibility to go to the bathroom before school,
between classes, during break and after school. However, I will
allow 2 emergency bathroom requests per student per nine
weeks (Record will be kept).
Mrs. Clayton’s Classroom Rules:
1. Come to class ready to learn.
2. Respect others and their property
3. Follow all Handbook and School rules
4. Keep area clean and free of clutter- please keep isles free of
book bags and purses. I must be able to walk the isles.

Mrs. Clayton’s Many No’s:


1. No cheating- 1st offense test will be retaken at my
convenience 2nd offense – automatic ZERO
2. No Gum- I don’t mind if you have water or hard candy in the
classroom, but no gum or other types of food or drinks. I
DON’T WANT BUGS.
3. NO CELL PHONES- If I see, hear or even think you have a
phone it is mine. I spend a lot of time preparing daily lessons
and I expect you to spend 50 minutes learning without
interruption.
4. No talking out- Show respect!!! If I am teaching you should
be listening not talking.
5. No wondering the room- Make sure you are ready to learn
when the bell rings. Wait until the bell rings to throw away
trash. If you need to sharpen a pencil, whole punch paper, or
use the stapler wait till you are working independently.
Consequences:
1. Verbal Warning
2. Complete a Behavior Journal and sign
3. Miss break
4. Write up
*** I have the right to skip numbers 1-3 and go directly to
#4 if I feel it is necessary. ***
Rewards:
1. Good Grades
2. Pleasant learning atmosphere
3. Possible nine week reward
