Life
1805 apprenticeship as pharmacy assistant at the Royal Court
Pharmacy
1806 Assistant, helping rsted prepare his university lectures
1809 began the study of medicine, physics, and chemistry
1815 took the pharmacist exam and graduated with a degree
in pharmacy
1816 received his masters degree
1817 defined his Doctoral dissertation on 'The effect of
Alkalies upon organic substances'
1818 travel to Gttingen, Germany. working in Friedrich
Stromeyer's laboratory and trained in analytical chemistry
1819 return to Denmark. established one of the first
laboratories in Europe for analytical and organic chemistry

Achievements
1822 he became extraordinary professor of chemistry
at the University of Copenhagen
1823. identified a new sulfur family and awarded a
silver medal by the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences
and Letters
1824 he was elected a member of the Royal Danish
Academy of Sciences.
1836 he became a Knight of the Order of the
Dannebrog, a very high honour bestowed by the
Danish monarch.
1829 until his death was professor of organic chemistry
at the Polytechnic Institute of Copenhagen

ethanol, leading to a series of platinum-based
organometallic compounds
