Nevada – 2nd District

Funds On Hand $444,000 $260,000
Recent Poll 31% 39%
One of the largest districts in the country, the 2nd came open when Rep. Jim Gibbons decided to run for governor. A
divisive Republican primary has left an opening for Jill Derby to take over in this GOP-held district. The Cook Political
Report ranks this race “Likely Republican.”

The District
District 2 covers nearly all of Nevada outside of
Las Vegas and its suburbs. The Republican Party is
sharply divided in Nevada; outgoing Gov. Kenny
Guinn has been ambivalent about endorsing
Gibbons in his gubernatorial bid, and a three-way
primary between Dean Heller, Sharron Angle and
Gibbons’ wife, Dawn, was so hotly contested that
the very conservative Angle is pressing for a new
election after her 421-vote loss.

About Jill Derby

A fourth-generation Nevadan, Jill Derby has spent
the last 17 years as University Regent for the state, overseeing Nevada’s public universities and community colleges. She

About Dean Heller

Nevada Secretary of State Dean Heller was the establishment candidate in the primary, receiving the support of the state’s
current governor and Senator. His opponent, Sharron Angle, was backed by conservative groups, including the Club for
Growth and the NRA. She is challenging the results of the election, claiming that Washoe County voters were unable to
vote due to numerous errors. Heller is attempting to dismiss the case, which is still pending. www.deanheller.com

Fundraising and Polling

Heller has brought in $904,000 and has $260,000 on hand after the bruising primary fight. A legal challenge may dwindle
this further. Derby is competitive, bringing in $748,000, 66% from individuals, and has $444,000 on hand.

Pre-primary polling indicated a wide-open race. The Reno Gazette-Journal’s May poll gave Heller a 39-31 lead over
Derby, with 30% still undecided.
