In the midst of his fourth term representing this mountainous district, Don Sherwood got caught up in scandal. Last year
he settled a lawsuit wherein an alleged mistress accused him of physical abuse during their five-year affair. This has given
Chris Carney an opening to pick up the seat. National interests and both parties are starting to pay attention. The Cook
Political Report ranks this race “Lean Republican.”

The District
Spanning 13 counties in northeast
Pennsylvania, the 10th is a generally
Republican district. It includes much of the
Poconos Mountains and the cities of
Williamsport and Carbondale. The area used to
be a center of coal and steel production, but the
industrial economy has declined here. State
Treasurer and 2006 Senate candidate Bob
Casey ran close races against Sherwood here in
1998 and 2000, and Sherwood faced a very
tough primary this year after his scandal
became public: he pulled only 56% of the
Republican vote.

About Don Sherwood

A reliable vote for Republican interests, Sherwood is considerably more conservative than the GOP incumbent he
replaced in 1998. He has only sponsored four bills during the past term, but he has voted in favor of the controversial
“Medicare Part D.” He is strongly supported by the mining, pharmaceutical and agribusiness industries. (no website

Fundraising and Polling

Sherwood has raised nearly $1.1 million – more than half from PACs – but was forced to spend heavily on his primary.
He has $479,000 left on hand. Carney raised $433,000 so far, 72% from individuals. He has $301,000 left. A Democratic
poll showed a tight race: Sherwood held a small 46-42 lead, within the margin of error. This a narrower lead than
Sherwood showed in a similar April poll.
