Urban League of San Diego County

Dear Students, Parents and Educators,

It is with great pleasure that I applaud all your efforts as you receive this most noted
award for academic excellence at the 17th Annual Golden Pyramid Academic Scholars
Awards Ceremony. I want you to be assured that I am committed to your continued
educational success and the Urban League’s quest for being a champion for academic
excellence for all youth.

As you enjoy this day continue to keep your eye on the prize – education at all costs.
As the new President and CEO of the Urban League of San Diego County I understand
the importance of being the best that you can be and giving it all you’ve got and not
giving up, but keep pushing no matter how difficult it may seem at times.

Remember – if you believe it you can achieve it!

Parents I equally applaud you for the fantastic job you’ve done at assisting your
children in achieving this momentous undertaking in their lives.
Without you it would not be possible.

Educators I continue to charge you to keep the standards high and continue to expect
more of our youth as they grow and become the awesome young men and women they
were meant to be.

Ray King
President & CEO,
Urban League of San Diego County
Golden Pyramid Scholars Awards Program
Purpose:
The Urban League’s Golden Pyramid Academic Scholars Program is designed to identify, recruit, nurture and
support those males and females of African descent who are striving to achieve
academic and economic excellence. The communities’ goal is to ensure that its future fathers, brothers, politicians,
scientists, carpenters, doctors and professors are identified early and supported continuously in their quest to
achieve excellence.

Reason:
The Urban League San Diego County understands by openly acknowledging our youth in a public forum, we
make it clear to our youth and community that we believe in and support the achievements of these young men
and women. These young men and women are being honored because they understand "Achievement Matters".
They are the building blocks of our community and our future.

County Superintendent of Schools

Welcome to the 17th Annual Golden Pyramid/National Achievers Society

Awards Ceremony. I would like to thank the Urban League of San Diego for its
efforts to recognize all of the outstanding young people being honored today.
The boys and girls we will meet today are only a fraction of the thousands of
high-achieving students attending our San Diego County public schools. They
represent the finest of our county’s 495,000 K-12 students, and as your County
Superintendent of Schools, I deeply appreciate your willingness to support
them.
All too often we hear criticism of today’s youth. Today’s Golden
Pyramid/National Achievers Society Awards Ceremony stands as a testament
to the strength and promise of our young people, and a reminder that our
community will be in good hands in the generations to come.
On behalf of the San Diego County Board of Education, thank you again for
your support of this awards ceremony, and for your continuing interest in the
achievement of our students in San Diego County public schools.

Sincerely,

Randolph E. Ward, Ed.D.

The Urban League of San Diego County has served the greater San Diego community, reaching out to not
just African Americans, but to people of all colors, ages and beliefs. Since 1953, the League has won some
battles, but many basic rights have yet to be guaranteed for all. The Urban League of San Diego County is
one of more than a 100 National Urban League affiliates nationwide dedicated to empowering African
Americans to enter the social and economic mainstream. Our primary constituency is San Diego County’s
African American population, which numbers approximately 158,000, but Urban League programs are
open to all. Approximately 15,000 people per year take advantage of the League’s programs and services,
all of which are free of charge. Another 7,000 participate in the League’s annual Career Fair, which links
those seeking employment with more than 100 area businesses.
The Mission
To assist African Americans and other underserved people in San Diego County to achieve social and
economic equality through advocacy, bridge building, program services and research.
The Strategy
The Urban League employs the following five point strategy in order to implement the mission
of our movement:
1. Education and Youth Empowerment: Ensuring all children are well educated and prepared for self reliance in
the 21st century through college scholarships, early childhood literacy, and after care programs.
2. Economic Empowerment: Empowering all people in attaining economic self sufficiency through job training,
good jobs, homeownership, entrepreneurship and wealth accumulation.
3. Health and Quality of Life Empowerment: Working to build healthy and safe communities to eliminate health
disparities through prevention, healthy eating, fitness, as well as ensuring access and complete access to
affordable healthcare for all people.
4. Civic Engagement and Leadership Empowerment: Empowering all people to take an active role in determining
the direction, quality of life, public policy and leadership in their communities by full participation as citizens
and voters, as well as through active community service and leadership development.
5. Civil Rights and Racial Justice Empowerment: Promoting and ensuring our civil rights by actively working to
eradicate all barriers to equal participation in all aspects of American society, whether political, economic,
social, educational or cultural.

Lift ev’ry voice and sing
Till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the list’ning skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.

Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past hast taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us.
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.

God of our weary years,

God of our silent tears,
Thou who has brought us thus far on the way;
Thous who has by Thy might
Led us into the light
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.

Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met thee,
Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget
thee,
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,
May we forever stand
True to our God,
True to our native land.
