Chapter 34

Of the Last Judgment

1. God hath appointed a day wherein He will judge the world in righteousness,
by Jesus Christ;

Acts And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where
17:30 to repent:
Acts Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by
17:31 that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he
hath raised him from the dead.

John For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
5:22
John That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not
5:23 the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
John Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me,
5:24 hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto
life.
John Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear
5:25 the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.
John For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
5:26
John And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
5:27

to whom all power and judgment is given of the Father; in which day not only the
apostate angels shall be judged,

I Corinthians 6:3 Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to
this life?

Jude And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath
1:6 reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.
but likewise all persons that have lived upon the earth, shall appear before the
tribunal of Christ, to give an account of their thoughts, words, and deeds, and to
receive according to what they have done in the body, whether good or evil.

II Corinthians For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may
5:10 receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be
good or bad.

Ecclesiastes For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it
12:14 be good, or whether it be evil.

Matthew But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give
12:36 account thereof in the day of judgment.

Romans But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for
14:10 we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.
Romans For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every
14:11 tongue shall confess to God.
Romans So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
14:12

Matthew When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then
25:31 shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:
Matthew And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from
25:32 another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:
Matthew And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.
25:33
Matthew Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father,
25:34 inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
Matthew For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I
25:35 was a stranger, and ye took me in:
Matthew Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came
25:36 unto me.
Matthew Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered,
25:37 and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?
Matthew When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?
25:38
Matthew Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?
25:39
Matthew And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye
25:40 have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Matthew Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into
25:41 everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
Matthew For I was an hungered, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no
25:42 drink:
Matthew I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in
25:43 prison, and ye visited me not.
Matthew Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, or
25:44 athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
Matthew Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to
25:45 one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
Matthew And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life
25:46 eternal.

2. The end of God's appointing this day, is for the manifestation of the glory of
His mercy, in the eternal salvation of the elect; and of His justice, in the
eternal damnation of the reprobate, who are wicked and disobedient;

Romans What if God, willing to show his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with
9:22 much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:
Romans And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which
9:23 he had afore prepared unto glory,
Romans Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?
9:24

for then shall the righteous go into everlasting life, and receive that fullness of joy
and glory, with everlasting reward, in the presence of the Lord: but the wicked who
know not God, and obey not the Gospel of Jesus Christ, shall be cast into eternal
torments,

Matthew His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been
25:21 faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the
joy of thy lord.

Matthew Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye
25:36 came unto me.

II Timothy I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
4:7
II Timothy Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the
4:8 righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also
that love his appearing.

and punished with everlasting destruction, from the presence of the Lord, and from
the glory of His power.

Matthew And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life
25:46 eternal.

Mark And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of
9:47 God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:
Mark Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
9:48

II Thessalonians We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that
1:3 your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward
each other aboundeth;
II Thessalonians So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and
1:4 faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:
II Thessalonians Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be
1:5 counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:
II Thessalonians Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that
1:6 trouble you;
II Thessalonians And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed
1:7 from heaven with his mighty angels,
II Thessalonians In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not
1:8 the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
II Thessalonians Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the
1:9 Lord, and from the glory of his power;
II Thessalonians When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them
1:10 that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.

3. As Christ would have us to be certainly persuaded that there shall be a day of

judgment, both to deter all men from sin,

II Corinthians For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may
5:10 receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be
good or bad.
II Corinthians Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made
5:11 manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.

and for the greater consolation of the godly, in their adversity,

II Thessalonians We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that
1:3 your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward
each other aboundeth;
II Thessalonians Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that
1:6 trouble you;
II Thessalonians And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed
1:7 from heaven with his mighty angels,
II Thessalonians In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not
1:8 the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
II Thessalonians Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the
1:9 Lord, and from the glory of his power;
II Thessalonians When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them
1:10 that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.

so will He have the day unknown to men, that they may shake off all carnal security,
and be always watchful, because they know not at what hour the Lord will come,

Mark Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at
13:35 midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning:
Mark Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.
13:36
Mark And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.
13:37

Luke Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning;
12:35
Luke And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the
12:36 wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately.
Luke Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I
12:37 say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will
come forth and serve them.
Luke And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so,
12:38 blessed are those servants.
Luke And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would
12:39 come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through.
Luke Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.
12:40
