To Whom It May Concern

This is to certify that Mr Parag Raipuria, a student of B.Tech (3rd year) in Civil Engineering
of the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati has done a project in “Centre for
infrastructure Sustainable Transportation and Urban Planning” of our institute in December
2009.

During this period, he has worked under my supervision on the project, “Modelling for an
Integrated Urban Mass Transit System”. During this very short period, he has done an
outstanding job by developing a very useful programming code for the minimization of
objective function for the “Train scheduling model” in the MATLAB environment. The
program directly gives the output as optimum frequency of trains on an identified rail
corridor, fleet size of trains, and the Vehicle Operator cost. The problem was formulated as a
combinatorial optimization.

I am quite surprised by the amount of quality work that he has done in such a short time,
given the fact that when he came for the project, he neither had any knowledge of the
Scheduling problem nor any exposure to research work in Transportation Planning. Based on
my interaction with him, I can definitely say that Parag is very strongly motivated, sincere
and Hard-working student. He can easily go deep into new and challenging problems to find
solutions. Over and above he has a very pleasant personality and other attributes to work in a
group. I find Parag to have all qualities to be a good researcher. I wish him every success in
life.
