In the lecture, Art in Miniature: Book Art and the
Turkish Tradition, Australian miniature artist
Prof Elizabeth Ashburn joins two experts from
Turkey, Dr Sulieman Berk and Dr Münevver Üçer,
to discuss this ancient art form. Turkish miniature
artist Gulay Pelin will assist with any necessary
translations.
Dr Sulieman Berk is a calligrapher and writer. He
has written several books and is the educational
adviser for Zayton Burnu Municipality, Centre
for Arts and Culture, Istanbul. Dr Berk is also a
member of the Scientific Committee, Ministry of
Culture, Turkey and World of Civilization and Arts
Foundation.

Prof Elizabeth Ashburn is an artist and teacher
who also writes and curates exhibitions on art and
politics. She is an Emeritus Professor at COFA
UNSW and an Adjunct Professor at the University
of Newcastle.
Dr Münevver Üçer contributes to the Turkish Art
of Tezhib (illuminations) both as an educator and
as an artist. She has taught at the Mimar Sinan
University since 1992. In addition to her academic
career, in 1995, Dr Üçer and her husband founded
a studio where they offer courses on Tezhib
calligraphy, miniature and wood painting.
