Born September 22, 1791
 English chemist and physicist viable for use in technology
 Studied the magnetic field
around a conductor carrying a
DC electric current
 Established the basis for the
electromagnetic field concept
in physics
 His inventions of
electromagnetic rotary
devices formed the
foundation of electric motor
technology
Faraday’s Law of Induction

 Faraday’s Law states that the electromotive

force is directly proportional to the time rate
of change of the magnetic flux through a
loop:
Є = - dФB/dt
where ФB = ∫ B. dA
Magnetic Flux

 Magnetic Flux is a measure of

quantity of
magnetism, taking into account the strength and
extent of a magnetic field:

ФB = ∫ B. da
ФB = BAcosθ

Electric Motor

 An electric motor is a motor that uses

electrical energy to produce mechanical
energy, usually through the interaction of
magnetic fields and current-carrying
conductors.
Electric Motor as Electric Generator

 A DC motor can be used as

a DC generator. Using
mechanical energy to rotate
the coil inside the motor at
uniform angular velocity in a
magnetic field, it will
produce an electromotive
force which is measured in
Volts
 Due to this resulting
voltage, the light bulb emits
light and the fan rotates
