ANIMAL CELLS

Aim : To observe the structure

of human cheek cells

Apparatus : Light
microscope, glass slide,
cover slip, mounted needle
and dropper

Materials: Toothpick, filter

paper, and methylene blue
solution

Procedure:
1. Some cheek cells are
collected by scraping the
inside wall of the cheek with
blunt end of a toothpick.
2. The scrapings are placed on
a drop of methylene blue
solution on a glass slide.
3. A cover slip is gently
lowered over the drop of
solution with the help of a
mounted needle.
4. The cells are examined
under the low power of a
light microscope.
5. The structures observed
under the microscope is
drawn.

Observation

(According to what you see)

Discussion:

1. The cheek cells are round and flat,

and stacked in layers, one over another.
2. The methylene blue solution is used
to stain the cells so that the structures
of the cells can be seen clearly.
3. Precaution that must be taken when
carrying out this experiment is to be
careful not to hurt anyone with the
sharp end of the toothpick or the
mounted needle.

Conclusion:
An animal cell has a cytoplasm, and a
nucleus surrounded by the cell
membrane.
