Friction loss in a pipe

AIM
To calculate the value of friction factor for the given pipe for different discharges..
THEORY
Basic equation, From Darcy Weisbach equation the head loss due to friction is given as

hf = f x L x V² / 2gD
Where,
L=length of pipe
V= velocity of flow through pipe
D= dia of pipe

Flow in a rough pipe

EXPERIMENTAL SETUP
1. It has two pipes of GI material of dia 20mm and 25mm respectively.
2. Differential manometer and discharge tank is provided to measure the head loss and
velocity of flow through pipe respectively.
PROCEDURE
1. Switch on the motor.
2. Open the regulatory for one pipe only
3. Measure the head difference between two points of pipe.
4. Measure the actual discharge using measuring tank (volume/time)
5. Calculate friction factor using Darcy weisbach formula.
6. Repeat the same procedure for second pipe of dia 25mm.
APPLICATIONS

1. Determination of layout of pipe

2. To ensure required head at outlet of the tap.
3. To confirm value of friction factor provided by manufacturer.
