NPTI - Hydro Power Training Centre, Nangal on 16-12-2009.
FOREWORD

N
ational Power Training Institute, a
National Apex Body under Ministry of
Power, Govt. of India has emerged as one
of India’s premier Technology and Management
Education & Training Institute, and has been
providing abundant “Opportunities for Growth”
to the power professionals. NPTI cherishes a
vision of value orientation and value addition to
national and transnational power and energy
sectors.
The Ministry of Power, Govt. of India has
envisaged a capacity addition of about 80,000
MW in the 11th Plan. The accelerated pace of
capacity addition is expected to create massive
investment in the industry and requires highly
qualified and competent Technical as well as Management personnel to respond proactively to the
challenges faced by the Power Industry.
NPTI has been conducting training programs in the areas of Generation, Transmission and Distribution
of Electricity at NPTI Headquarter and Institutes located at Neyveli (Tamil Nadu), Durgapur (West
Bengal), Badarpur (New Delhi), Nagpur (Maharashtra) in the past decades. To cater to the Training
needs of North Eastern Region , a new Institute with the latest lab facilities has been created and is
in operation. NPTI is also running specialized training programs on Hydro Power Development at its
new specialized Hydro Power Training Center at Nangal equipped with the latest state-of-the-art
hydro power and electrical testing laboratories. The state-of-the-art Hydro Simulator, which is replica
of 250 MW ,Unit No. 1 of SJVNL is in advance stage of development and is likely to be available for
training by the end of second quarter of this financial year.
A new avenue for catering to the training needs at technician level first time in India has been
formulated with NTPC Ltd in line with the Government of India Policy. The Governing Council of
NPTI has agreed to take up the ventures i.e., in Solapur, which will be one of the specialized Training
Centers for ITI and above level with all the training facilities presently required by major and ancillaries
Industries in the Region. Similar venture is in the pipeline for a proposed Mining Institute at
Jharkhand.
The Hot Line Training Centre at Bengaluru, a specialized Institute which conducts training on Live
Line Maintenance Techniques on transmission lines upto 400 KV and also conducts programs on
Live Line substation maintenance including live line insulator washing.
Power System Training Institute at Bengaluru is catering to the training needs in the area of Power
system and load dispatch in the country. The Power System Training Institute, Bengaluru, NPTI
(WR), Nagpur and NPTI(NER), Guwahati Institutes conduct programs in the areas of transmission
and distribution with excellent placement opportunities. The Load Despatch Training Simulator at
Bengaluru is being upgraded along with various laboratories to provide training on latest developments
in the sector.
Simulator training for Reflex Development of operators is being carried out in NPTI through state of
the art Simulators, 210 MW LMW at Badarpur, 210 MW KWU at Nagpur and 500 MW KWU at
Faridabad. These are real time full scope PC based thermal power plant training Simulators for
carrying out Off-Job Hands on Training. A Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Simulator 430 MW (2 x 143
MW Gas Turbine and 1 x 144 MW Steam Turbine is already offering training program for Power
Professionals at Faridabad.
A centre for excellence in GIS and Remote Sensing has been established at NPTI complex, Faridabad
which conducts 52 weeks Post Graduate Diploma in GIS & Remote Sensing and 26 weeks Advanced
Diploma Course in GIS & Remote Sensing.
TRAINING CALANDER 2010 - 2011

In order to serve the Industry requirement & make best use of Infrastructure & expertise, NPTI has
ventured Into providing Consultancy Services in the field of Human Resources Development including
Training Need Analysis, Up-gradation of Training Facilities, Customized Course Designs, Capacity
assessment / evaluation for promotion / Recruitment etc. Also NPTI provides Technical Consultancy
in preparation of DPRs under R-APDRP (11th Plan). DPRs for various towns of Power & Energy Dept.
of Sikkim and PuVVNL, Varanasi were prepared and submitted to the Utilities. The DPRs preparation
for various towns of Tripura State Electricity Corporation (TSECL) is in progress. NPTI is also REC
Quality Monitors (RQM) for RGGVY works under 11th Plan for six (6) states. NPTI is also empanelled
as Third Party Inspection Agency (TPIA) by REC and has also been awarded the TPIA works for a few
DISCOMs (MESCOM & GESCOM, Karnataka) for the RGGVY works under the 10th and 11th Plans.
NPTI has been engaged as Consultant by M/s Advanced Engineering Associates International, Inc.
(AEAI), USA for the project on (Human & Institutional Capacity Building for Afganistan Energy &
Natural Resources Sector) under USAID M/s AEAI & NPTI also entered into an MoU. A report for
establishment of Vocational Training Centre (VTC) at Kabul has also been submitted.
NPTI has entered into an Agreement with PA Consulting Services Inc. located at USA for providing
professional consultancy and related services.
NPTI has conducted five training programs under this agreement for the year 2009-2010. The short
term and long term programs on “O&M of Sub-station Equipment”, “O&M of T&D” and Training of
Trainers were conducted under Afghan Capacity Building Program under SARI/Energy, USAID.
In the field of education NPTI has made rapid strides. B.E./B.Tech. (Power Engineering) Graduates
passing out from Badarpur, Nagpur and Durgapur continue to be highly sought after by the Power
Supply Industry. PGDC in Thermal Power Plant Engineering programs conducted at Nagpur, Neyveli,
Durgapur , Badarpur & Guwahati have established their reputation by helping to improve the plant
load factors of Thermal Power Plants and have 100% placement record.
The MBA in Power Management program in the last six years has catered to the industry needs in
providing Power Managers who take on issues from both technical and managerial perspectives. For
the last four batches placement has been 100% in companies like ABPS infrastructure advisory,
Adani Energy, BSES, CARE, CFL, CRISIL, Enercon, Feed Back Ventures, KLG Systel, KPMG, KSK
Energy, NDPL, Noida Power, PWC, PTC India Ltd., REL, Satyam, Suzlon, Tata Power, Torrent Power,
UJVNL, Infraline Energy, Global Energy Ltd., Energy InfraTech, Moser Baer, Lanco Solar, Lanco
Trading, GMR, IREDA, etc.
To ensure reliable, safe and quality power for all, we at NPTI have started distribution franchise
programs and have initiated steps which will ensure well trained technicians and linemen in the
near future. NPTI is also conducting training programs through learning centers in collaboration
with Indira Gandhi national open University, New Delhi for supervisors & Technicians working in
Power Sector.
NPTI continues its march to share knowledge with other friendly countries by transnational training
ventures in India and abroad.
NPTI Corporate Centre and its Regional Institutes have successfully organized on emerging areas to
facilitate interaction amongst all the stakeholders aiming towards cultivating a “Think Tank’ culture
in Power Sector.
To make our trainees more comfortable, the training infrastructure is also being upgraded. All out
efforts are being made to ensure that the courses offered by NPTI stand out and meet the Power
Sector needs. We have been modifying our training calendar to incorporate the programs which are
in great demand.
