CONCLUSION

The list of programmes adapted from tried and tested international formats has been on a
constant rise. Industry experts say it isn't lack of originality that makes producers and creative
heads of channels adapt foreign formats; they do so because it provides a convenient
reference point and also makes business sense.
Though some original shows like Saanp Seedi, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, Antakshari, Tol Mol Ke Bol
and Boogie Woogie did surface on the small screen before 2000, but post- Kaun Banega
Crorepati" producers started lapping up foreign entertainment programmes. Although
producers are lapping up foreign formats, they usually don't buy the rights to adapt them.
"There are not many Indian broadcasters who actually license international formats. Rip-offs
with a few tweaks are more the norm and so it is difficult for licensors to sue (the channels),"
said Basu.

But Are Global TV Formats Killing Local Innovation?

There has been a mixed response to it. The thought process - when it comes to reality and
format shows - that prevails in the industry is: 'why reinvent the wheel when something that
has been a huge hit around the globe can be picked up and tweaked to suit Indian
sensibilities?'
Since, game shows and reality shows do not follow a rigid format, it is easier to pick western
concepts and rope in a desi celebrity to produce an Indian version. More imported formats are
also visible because, of late, foreign production houses such as Endemol have set up shop in
the country. It is natural for them to bring some of the most successful formats to India.
International shows – for many – work out to be an easy proposition to spin out talking points
and generate easy buzz. But we must not lose sight of some of the successful home-grown
content such as Zee's Antakshari, MTV Roadies and STAR One's Great Indian Laughter
Challenge.
To keep up the home grown media alive Indian writers need to wake up. There was a time
when Indian writers were most sought after. Their knowledge and writing style created
revolution that inspired the youth. Thus encouraging budding talents and originality will
make this era glorious in the history of television.
