Shramadana Campaign

Avenue of Service : Community Service

The project was initiated as club members complained about the state of the common
room areas within the Arts Faculty. The two main areas in which students study, spend
their free time and at times eat needed a thorough clean up. Many of the chairs and tables
were unusable as they were filled with dust and grim. Rt. Harshanee was in charge of the
project and the dates were set after consulting and obtaining permission from the
university administration.

The project was divided into two phases and carried out on Sundays. The Yellow Table
area was chosen for the first phase which was held on the 6th of June. The Green table
area was cleaned on the 13th of June. Rt. Harshanee called for volunteers to attend the
Shramadana campaign. It was commendable to see the first year members taking part
enthusiastically in this project. The attendees were asked to bring gloves, rags and
sponges. The other necessary items were borrowed from the cleaning service company
working within the university.

Even though it was a tiring job to scrub marks off tables and remove chewing gum from
chairs, the members had much fun. It was a great opportunity to get to know each other.
The greater student body of the Arts Faculty benefited from this project. It was highly
commended by the students and also the lecturers and the administration. Since the
Rotaract Club is a new club within university, this project brought much needed positive
publicity about the club and its objectives.
