INTRODUCTION
At Tata Power, Corporate Sustainability integrates economic progress, social
responsibility and environmental concerns with the objective of improving the
quality of life for all stakeholders, now and for generations to come. It as an
opportunity to make a difference and remain committed to the issues of resource
conservation, energy efficiency, environment protection and enrichment and
development of local communities in and around our areas of operations.

They are trying to set standards in the development and implementation of cutting edge eco-

friendly technologies and processes for energy management. They have recently announced

to bring carbon capture and storage technologies from the research and pilot stages into

large scale commercial application. They are working with policymakers and regulators to

advance technology, strengthen the renewable energy portfolio, accelerate the development

of cost effective energy efficiency programs and manage consumers’ demand for electricity
ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT
In keeping with the motto of the Tata Group, Tata Power has
constantly given high priority to social concerns.
They continually strive towards sustainable development by trying
to find a balance between the needs of our customers and
responsible care for the environment. We are committed to protect
and promote the environment.  We have a well-defined
Environment Policy and all our plants have environmental
management system in place. Tata Power has established a
Corporate Safety, Health & Environment Department (C-SHE)
which is responsible for all environmental and safety activities in
the company.
Making Positive Environment Impact
 Over Rs.100 crores have been invested on pollution control
equipment at the Trombay Thermal Power Plant .
 India’s first-of-its-kind Flue Gas-De-sulphurisation (FGD)
plant to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions in flue gas, based on
the sea-water scrubbing principle.
 Electrostatic Precipitators of 99.5%
efficiency.
 Tall Chimneys (152 m and 275 m)
to limit the ground level concentration
of pollutants.
 Low NOx burner to minimise NOx
Pollution.
 The Fly ash generated from all thermal power plants is used in
ready mix concrete.  Trombay Thermal Power Station has
developed an in-house technology in collaboration with TERI for
treatment of oily sludge in eco-friendly manner. Some other
examples of the key improvements:
 Replacement of Indian coal by imported coal with lower sulphur
and lower ash content.
 Improvement to the channel carrying the condenser cooling water
discharge.
 Anhydrous Ammonia injection method to
control SPM level.
 New FGD for the additional 250 MW capacity
that has been set-up at Trombay.
 Maximizing the utilization of gas over other
fossil fuels
Non-conventional Energy
 Tata Power also shares worldwide concern for the depleting levels of
conventional fuels and has planned to tap the non-conventional energy
resources. To begin with, Tata Power has installed and commissioned
an environment-friendly 110 KW Solar Energy Plant across the
Walwhan Reservoir on an experimental basis.
 Tata Power has made a foray in the renewable energy sector with
commissioning of a 17 MW wind power project at Supa near
Ahmednagar, Maharashtra.

Environment Education
 Environment education must be made a concomitant of environment
conservation. Tata Power has taken a lead in this direction.
 Tata Power conducts a non-formal School Comprehensive
Environment Programme (SEEP) with the help of Bharati Vidyapeeth
Environment Education and Research Institute, Pune.
 The Company has undertaken to set up an Environment
Interpretation Centre to create general awareness among people.
 Construction of Primary schools in rural areas.
 Constructing of one-room primary education centres in 38
remote villages in the catchment areas to ensure that at
least primary education is available. Tata Power is also
committed to assist in building 4 to 5 schools every year.
The Company also provide all necessary help in running the
schools at the power stations at Bhira and Bhivpuri.
 Improving the quality of water of village ponds.
 Providing medical aid in rural areas by organising medical
camps with the help of Doctors of Rotary Club.
New Technologies

In line with the changing global scenario, Tata Power’s

generation portfolio is being planned in a way that aims to greatly
reduce overall carbon intensity. Various new technologies and
upcoming and innovative clean and renewable energy technologies
are evaluated and reviewed for their potential applicability in the
business.

They are exploring a variety of technologies including Wind

and Micro-Wind, Solar – thermal as well as PV (normal and
concentrated), Biomass / Agri Waste based power generation, Run
the river hydro projects, Clean Coal, Integrated Gasification and
Combined Cycle, Advanced Geothermal and Carbon Capture using
Algae. Other technologies including Ocean, Tidal and Wave Energy
being in a very nascent stage are also being tracked for future
applications.
Tata Power is working with different national institutes
like the Indian Institute of Technology, in developing and
demonstration of projects in the renewable resource
power generation. They have already invested in two
developing technologies for cleaning of coal and another
in the advanced geothermal power generation system.
Small pilot projects are implemented to demonstrate and
evaluate the commercial applications.
Sustainability Reporting
Tata Power has adopted guidelines laid down by the Global
Reporting Initiative (GRI) for its Sustainability Reporting.
The GRI guidelines encompass the 'triple bottom line' (TBL)
approach which focus on financial, social and environmental
performance. Using these guidelines the company can report
its performance on 79 parameters in these three core areas.
Tata Power prepared its first Corporate Sustainability Report
in 2003 according to the GRI 2002 guidelines for the period of
1st April 2002- 31st March 2003. The second report titled
“Responsible Growth & Beyond” for 2008-09 was published in
December 2009 according to the new GRI G3 guidelines. From
2009 onwards, the company has declared its intent to report
annually on its sustainability performance.
Carbon Disclosure Project

The Carbon Disclosure Project is an independent non-profit

organization holding the largest database of primary corporate
climate change information in the world.
Thousands of organizations from across the world’s major
economies measure and disclose their greenhouse gas emissions
and climate change strategies through CDP. The Carbon
Disclosure Project puts this information at the heart of financial
and policy decision-making. Tata Power submitted its first
report to the CDP for the period 2008-2009 and has declared its
intent to make this disclosure on an annual basis.
The company is working on a clean technology interface with American
Electric Power (AEP) of the US and the European energy major
Vattenfall - a leader in the 3 C global initiative. The long term goals are
to increase the installed capacity of no-carbon power sources to 40% of
the total capacity and to reduce the Carbon Dioxide Intensity by 30%.
Tata Power is a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact, a
United Nations initiative that encourages businesses to adopt
sustainable policies, and a member of the ‘corporate roundtable’ for
sustainable development in India, which is backed and promoted by
The Energy and Research Institute (TERI).
Tata Power has regular interactions with the Confederation of Indian
Industry (CII) and TERI on preparing the power industry’s response to
the Indian government’s National Action Plan on Climate Change. It is
a member of the Chicago Climate Exchange — a voluntary greenhouse
gases reduction and trading system — it is involved with the Cleantech
Forum and is, in an effort to review new technologies, part of the
Industrial Liaison Program (ILP) at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT).
