Summary:

In the article, “Over Population In India: Religion versus Policy in Population Control,”

Roopa Bhat discusses at 9/1/06 that though India had the fastest economy growing speed in the

third quarter of fiscal year 2003-04, it faced a series of serious problems because of the concern

surfaced regarding its population and its uninhibited growth.

India is now the second most populous country with 16% of the world’s population in the

2.4% of the world’s land area and it will be the most populous by 2030. The population has

doubled in past 40 years; therefore, the standard of living decreased. 30% of Indian population

lives below the poverty level and most of the population lives in rural areas haven’t access to

adequate drinking water. There are also many problems of the increasing need of natural

resources, education and jobs in the future because almost 40% of the population is younger than

15.

Various policies tried to control the population growth in the past had all failed
