It is desired to determine the drag force at

a given speed on a prototype sailboat hull.
A model is placed in a test channel and
three cables are used to align its bow on
the channel centerline. For a given speed,
the tension is 40 N in cable AB and 60 N in
cable AE.

Determine the drag force exerted on the

hull and the tension in cable AC.

ANSWER

7m 1 .5 m
tan α= =1 .75 tan β= =0 . 375
4m 4m
α=60 .25 ° β=20 .56 °
Equilibrium for all forces must be zero,so the equation
become :

∑ f y=0T ab . cos α +T ac . cos β−T ae=0

40 . cos 60,25+T ac . cos 20.56−60=0
40 . 0,49+T ac . 0,936−60=0T ac . 0,936=4 0 , 4
T ac =+ 43,16 N ∑ f x =0T ab . sin α −FD−T ac . sin β =040 . sin 60,25−FD −T ac . sin 20.56=0
40 . 0,868−FD−T ac .0,35=034,72−FD−T ac . 0,35=034,72−FD−43.16 . 0,35=0
34,72−FD−15,10=0FD=+19,62 N

So from the equation above we get the tension in cable AC ( T ac) is 43,1 Newton, and the forces of
river flow is 19,62 Newton
