FMVSS 302

Flammability of materials used in the occupant compartments of motor vehicles


according to FMVSS 302. (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standrad).

Main field of application 

The standard decides the burning rate of materials in the occupant compartments
of motor vehicles. Requirements of burning rates are found in FMVSS 302. 
Examples of products that can be tested with this method 
Any portion of a single or composite material which is within 13 mm of the occupant compartments air space. 

Material consumption during test                                 

Complete test  
5 tests 8 test specimens, with the dimension 100 mm x 356 mm.

 
Indicative test 2 test specimens, with the dimension 100 mm x 356 mm.
 

 Test Procedure

The test is conducted inside a test chamber where the test specimen is mounted horizontally. The exposed
side of the test specimen is subjected to a gas flam from underneath. The burnt distance and the time taken to
burn this distance is measured during the test. The result, the burning rate, is expressed in mm/min.
