Sculpture- Filipinos learned the elements of western sculpture from early spanish missionaries.

Some Filipino sculptures were Isable Tmping Co, Manuel Asuncion and Mariano Madriñan won
honors through their master pieces in wood craving of beautiful saints.

Literature- during the early years of spanish regime literature was mostly religious in type. In
the latter years the awits(chivalric- heroic poems) and corridos (legendary -religios poems)
became popular.

Music- it was enriched by spanish and mexican influences. Popular folk dances such as polka,
lanceros , rigodon and carinosa came from Spain. The pandango, and kuratsa were Mexican.
Filipino songs were also hispanized such as the sampaguita and bella filipina. From bamboo,
Filipinos made musical instrument resembling the foreign countries one example is the famous
bamboo organ in las pinas built in 1818 by Fr. Diego Cerra.

Cockfighting- existed in the Philippines before the coming of the spaniards but it was spain
who legalized cockfighting as a form of gambling. Many terms used in cockfighting were also
hispanized.

Horse races- known as the sport of the kings was introducedin 1868. It was the favorite
pastime of the elite. The hippodrome (race track) was located in santa ana, manila. The horse
racing season lasted three days wherein all business in manila was suspended.

Lottery- it was also introduced as a legalized gambling for purposes of government revenues.
Established in 1850 under the supervision and management of loteria national it draws every
month at the lottery building in Intramuros. Tickets were sold in manila and other provinces. R
Rizal was also a winner in this lottery.

Architecture- Spanish architecture can be seen in our Catholic churches, old forts and store
houses of well-to-do families.

Painting- the first Filipino painter to win fame was Damian Domingo, ‘the Father of Filipino
Painting”. In 1920 he founded the first school of painting in Manila. Other famous painters were
Juan Luna and Felix Hidalgo who obtained their art education from Spanish masters.

Sciences- Spanish Friars were the first scientist in the Philippines. Most of them were botanist
studying the floras and faunas of the country. Some of the Filipino scientists during that period
were Jose Rizal, Deon Maria Guerrero, Antonio Luna, Anacleto Del Rosario.
