II- REDUCTION OF NON-DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES TO PARTICIPLE

CLAUSES

Non-defining relative clause (passive)

The two survivors, who were worn out by hunger and fatigue, at last reached the coast.

Worn out by hunger and fatigue, the two survivors at last reached the coast.

b- The new tenants, who had been warned of the mice, came prepared with traps and poison.
Non-defining relative clause (passive)

The new tenants, who had been warned of the mice, came prepared with traps and poison.

The new tenants, having been warned of the mice, came prepared with traps and poison.
Perfect participle (passive)

Since there is time difference between the verb of main clause and the verb of the non
defining relative clause, perfect participle is used.

Having been warned of the mice, the new tenants came prepared with traps and poison.

c- The baby, who was crying loudly, woke up every body.


Non-defining relative clause (active)

The baby, who was crying loudly, woke up every body.

Crying loudly, the baby woke up every body.
