ANSYS

Step by step procedure:

1. Open ANSYS software by clicking on the icon on desktop select preferences as
structural and click ok.
2. In the preprocessor step → select element type → click on Add / Delete → Click
on Add → shell → Select linear layer 99 → Apply → close.
3. Real constants → Add / Delete → ok → ok → No. of layers 8 → ok → 0, 0.66 &
enter the read data → ok.
4. Material properties → mat models → structural → linear → elastic → orthotropic
→ enter values → ok → close.
5. Modeling → creates → areas → rectangle → B: Dimension → (0, 300/8)
(0,300/8) {→ enter these values}.
6. Meshing → size controls → manual size → lines → picked lines → Select in
figure the bottom horizontal line → N Div=10 → apply.

N Div =10

7. Again do the above step up to picked lines (or) directly select the vertical line in
figure → Apply → N Div =5 → ok.

N Div=5

N Div =10
8. Mesh → Areas → mapped → ¾ sides → click on figure → click ok.

N Div=5

N Div= 10

9. Plot on menu → layered elements → click on figure → enter start and end of
layers data.
10. Plot → layered elements next plot → elements.
11. Solution → define loads → apply → structural → displacement → symmetry
boundary conditions → on lines → Horizontal, vertical → apply.

ssssssssssss ← it appears like this

12. Force / moment → on nodes → drag a box with the help of mouse → click on
figure on right edge as the no. of nodes = 11 → Apply → force values/11.

In drag the box with mouse

13. Solve → current L.S.

14. General post processor → plot results → Deformed shape → ok.
15. Contour plot → nodal solution → x- component displacement → ok → similarly
select y- component displacement.
16. Stress in x & y, von-misses select them.
17. Check for interlaminar stress in shell linear layer 99. The formulas are as given
below in ANSYS Help:-
(2*i) +7 → Bottom layer i
(2*i) +9 → Top layer NL

Examples for 4 Layers we have to do for 8 layers in this procedure

Layer Orientation
Case 1:- 1 0 NL
2 90 i
3 90
4 0
SMISC (2* 1) +7=9
SMISC=9
SMISC (2* 2) +9=13
SMISC=13
Case 2: 1 0
2 90 NL
3 90 i
4 0

Case 3:- 1 0
2 90
3 90 NL
4 0i
18. General post processor → Element table → define table → Add → By sequence
numbers → SMISC 9 → Apply → Add → by sequence number → SMISC13 →
Apply → close → plot results → contour plot → element table → select
SMISC9,SMISC13, → ok.
This is for case (1)
Repeat step 18 for case (2) & case (3) also for getting the interlaminar stresses.
The layers are arranged like this

0 LAYER 1
30 LAYER 2
60 LAYER 3
90 LAYER 4
90 L5
60 L6
30 L7
0 L8

0,30,60,90,90,60,30,0 are symmetric Layers orientation
