Reflection “Introduction to CALL”

The first topic that we already saw was about what is Computer Assisted Language

Learning, and also we saw Warschaver´s definition, what he thinks about

technology, and 5 points that help teachers to work with technology and students

at the same time.

The definition of CALL to me, it is the technology that we use to apply some

techniques in learning a second language. I can say that technology is like a tool

that we use in every life. There are two types to describe technology; determinist, it

says “technology” determines acting about a result good or bad, and

instrumentalism, it says “technology” is the way to find the solutions to problems.

Also we saw about what can or cannot do a computer based in Meskill on 2002.

He said “a computer can motive task persistence”, and I agree with this because

computers can identify a mistake and tell you do it again, so that is motivation, and

something that a computer cannot do is face to face interaction.

Warschaver (1997) said that technology is not everything in life but necessary, so

he proposed 5 points that help teachers apply technology activities into a second

language acquisition in the classroom. These five points are:

1. Make sure about your goals in the course.

2. Know how integrate technology with your goals of the course.

3. Train students to use Internet.

4. Provide some problems using tests, hand outs, training session, etc.

5. Consult to the students about problems that they may have and then use

technology.
