Newton’s First Law

 “An object at rest stays at rest and
an object in motion stays in motion
with the same speed and in the same
direction
unless acted upon by an unbalanced
force
.“
Newton’s Second Law
 “The acceleration of an object as
produced by a net force is directly
proportional to the magnitude of the
net force, in the same direction as
the net force, and inversely
proportional to the mass of the
object.”
Newton’s Second Law…
Worked Out
 Formula for Force
(force=mass x acceleration)
 Let’s say I can longsnap a football 12.80 meters
in .85 seconds. That is an acceleration of 17.71
m/s (12.80/.85). If I snap a regulation NFL
football that’s mass is .424 kilograms, I snap with
a force of 7.512 newtons.
 17.71 x .424=7.512 newtons

acceleration mass force

Newton’s Third Law
 “For every action there is an equal
and opposite reaction.”
Newton’s Third Law
Sports Examples
 If I kick a football at a goalpost (action),
and the ball hits and bounces off of the
goalpost (reaction)
 If I hit a tennis ball with a racquet,
(action) and the ball bounces off of it
(reaction)
 If I bounce a soccer ball off of my head,
(action) and the ball bounces away
(reaction)
Vocabulary
 Inertia-the resistance an object has
to a change in its state of motion
 Newton-the absolute unit of force in
the International System of Units
(SI units)
