The role of men and women
In the opening of our thriller the victim is
female and is represented as helpless as she
put up no real fight against the killer who
remains unseen which makes him seem more
of a threat. The female victim is wearing
white which makes her seem more innocent.
She is not a young character because we
wanted her to be more helpless however we
didn’t make her old because we wanted the
killer to seem more dangerous and if he was
attacking elderly people he would seem less
threatening. Overall we have followed thriller
codes and conventions by having a helpless
female character and a dangerous male killer
(despite him being unseen in this opening
scene).
The Victim

In our opening I believe our character is

represented similar to Clarice Starling
(played by Jodie Foster) from ‘Silence of
the Lambs because they are both females
on their own and the camera follows
them as if it were a killer. In the opening
scene of both films they are both made to
seem helpless.
The Killer

In the opening sequence of both Jaws

and our thriller the killer isn’t seen as it
follows the victim from the killers
perspective which is why I believe our
killer is like the shark from jaws because
he remains mysterious and unseen.
Also just as the audience are made to
assume the killer is a shark in ‘Jaws’ the
audience are made to assume the killer
is a man in our thriller opening.
